No such thing as an ideal "anything". Sailboats are full of compromises. Smaller lines provide less friction while larger ones provide better grip. Some have less strech than others. Working loads and durability also vary. Some worry about weight and windage while others ponder about cost. I even met a fellow that purchased his halyards primarily for their looks. Heavier cords bang loudest gainst the mast when tied up. List your priorities, figure out the length you need and go shopping.
