I want to lead the mainsail and headsail halyards to the pit. My Hunter 23 has a FranceSpar mast. Has anyone with this mast done this? Can you give me some suggestions? The main halyard exits the mast on the port side and the jib halyard exits the mast on the oposite side of the main halyard exit plate but not quite all the way over on the starboard side. I am trying to figure out how to get them both to the starboard side if possible because the mast light electrical plug is on the port side next to the mast. Thanks, Brian

..to make it easier to explain. Basically, you need to have mast base sheaves to exit the halyards from the mast and a deck organizer to carry them back to the cockpit. There you will need a line stopper for each. The stoppers should sit as close to in line as possible with the winch. Moving the halyard from one side of your mast to the other is just a matter of fishing with a wire hook through the exit sheaves.

Are you saying that I need to cut a new exit point for the haylards into the mast. Wouldn't this weaken the mast? Thanks, Brian

I have no idea how to get your main to exit starboard but I do know I tried to run my lines back on my hunter 23 and it was damn difficult, I even had a rigger working on my furler take a look and said it wouldnt be worth it. With the angles on the boat and the space it is just no good, not impossible but expensive and a headache! But good luck! -Jeff Hunter 23

I have the FranceSpar as well. My mast had a small "u" shaped strap on the port side about 8 inches off the deck. I took a snap shackel block and attached it to the "u" and ran the halyard through the block back to a line stopper mounted on the cabin top by the companionway next to the teak grap rail. The line stopper is angled to aline the pull with the main halyard. The cabin hatch can not be lifted up with the lines running over it but if I release the snap shackels the lines will clear no problem. I had to add a second "u" strap to the starboard side and a second line stopper on the starboard side of the cabin as well. I also added down hauls to the jib and main and mounted the jam cleat next to the line stopper. For the jib I ran the downhaul back along the stanchons and put the jam down on the side deck. I'll try to find a photo that might show the set up. Bottom line quick and easy with 8 very small holes (Epoxy sealed)in the deck. Mark Price S/V Wendy Lee H23

Mark - No boom vang?
I don't see a boom vang in your picture. A buddy of mine just bought a Hunter 22 from the mod-80's and it has no sign of a boom vang either. I can't imagine not having one. Don't you miss it? ...RickM...

An attachment for a boom vang would be in the sail slot on the aft side of the mast. I have thought about a boomvang but not having one has not seemed to a problem yet. Maybe I'll add one this spring and try it out. The lake I sail on in Ohio is really small (1 X 2 miles) but I'm still one of the faster boats (only the 2 27 Footers give me a run for the money). With the 37C that I have in Annapolis I really sail most weeknights on the H23 and then longer weekends on the H37C during the summer. Right now I'm stripping the woodwork on the H37C, almost done with the update to the interior. New cushions in the spring should be the last of the upgrades for a bit.
