Halyards in Mast and Back to Cockpit

Don or anyone,

I'm running my halyards in my mast and back to the cockpit and am wondering is there any protocall as to which sides the different halyards should be on?

It seens to me that I read somewhere that there was, but can't find it.

On my boat the headsail halyards are on the ports side, the mainsail and spinnaker halyards are on the starboard side. The reason is most likely because the internal halyards exit the mast on the respective sides..... So it was determined by the factory.

I'm not aware of any protocol on this... but it makes sense to group similar lines together to share winch time.... and make it easier for the crew to find the correct line. Most boats I've been on have the main on the right and the jib on the left...

What lines are you bringing back? If you run a spinnaker, there are more lines to manage... topping lift, foreguy/tackline, spin halyard...etc. you need to spread your lines among your available winches... or set some of the lines up with a purchase system so you don't need a winch..... like the vang, cunningham, foreguy, toplift, etc....

So... if you split the halyards, jibs to the left, main and spin to the right, you'll be able to allocate additional lines as they come on board.

FWIW ... the main halyard is usually on (or exits from) the stbd side of the mast. This allows a boat to be the stand-on vessel on starboard tack .... while youre reefing from the mast position. This also this keeps you on the 'high side' of the boat during the 'reefing' while sailing (on stbd tack) mostly on the jib/genoa.

I just have the main, jib, topping and a spare that could be used for a spinnaker.

Don't race, to damn old for that, just mostly single handing and teaching 11 year old grand son to sail.

Just be cruising if I get there today okay, if I don't get there till tomorrow or the next day that's okay too.

Roller Furler Line
Single line Reefing
Topping Lift

The question is which should I use

Plain Cleat
Clam Cleat
Cam Cleat
Clutch

Not racing just lazy cruising.

Can't speak for others but here's my setup . . .

Main Halyard -- Spinlock PXR Cleat (upgrading to Clutch next year)
Jib Halyard -- Spinlock PXR Cleat (upgrading to Clutch next year)
Spinnaker halyard -- Spinlock PXR Cleat (upgrading to Clutch next year)
Vang -- Cam (big)
Preventer -- n/a
Jib Sheets -- Cam (jib), Self tailing winch (genoa, jib when single handing)
Roller Furler Line -- Cam
Single line Reefing -- Clam/jam x 2 (double line reefing)
Topping Lift n/a -- (boomkicker)
Outhaul -- Clam/jam *and* plain/horn cleat (stays put!)
Cunningham -- Cam (big)
Backstay adjuster -- Cam x2 (one on each side of boat)

That gives me some idea, have to use a topping lift, boom kicker interferes with the pop top. Also I have 2 reefing lines, first and second reef.
