Thanks

Thanks for the info. One more question - any one have a guess to the load on the halyard? 200lbs? 100lbs? I am looking to replace the cleat with a rope clutch or a cam cleat. The cleat I am thinking about is the attached link. The medium size has a safe working load of 300lbs.

John Are you replacing the cleat to make it easier for dropping the main when sailing solo? It seems that a cam cleat with the halyard led aft would be helpful, especially considering the 170's difficulty in staying head to wind. If you don't mind, could you let me know how it works out. I often sail singlehanded and wish I could release the main quickly when docking. Thanks, Bryan

cleat

Bryan, I got the cam cleat shown in the link, but the cleat itself is almost as long as the mast is wide. Looks like I am going to return it and stick with the normal cleat. As far as the halyard led aft, I would not be sure where to attach the cleat. On the ACP I would want a backing plate. Maybe mount a turning block on the mast support (the C-plate where the mast sits) and mount the cleat on the vertical part of the seats, (near the bottom) maybe 2/3 of the length back. Or the easy solution is a tiller tamer IMHO. John
