halyard wrap jib

I have halyard wrap on my jib. I see no sign of damage at the top of the mast . No info in owner's manual, no info on roller furling itself, no trouble until this year. Its an 88 bought in 88. I have an O'Day 272LE

Cause of Halyard Wrap

Jerry, If the jib halyard wrapped while furling the head sail your upper furling bearing has failed. Other causes such as faulty installation are unlikely because of the time involved. Time to go up the stick to manually unwrap halyard and then lower jib to service upper bearing.

Check full hoist

Make certain the upper swivel is hoisted all the way up. It doesn't take much length between the top of the track and the swivel to cause wraps. On the other hand, be careful not to over-hoist and pop the cap off the top.

Halyard wrap

If you changed the jib and is shorter than the old one, you must ensure the top bearing goes all the way up to prevent it from turning. The old jib might have stretched. One of the cure is to make a panant to extend the bearing to the top.
It is also possible someone released the jib halyard and you let the jib out.

Alternatively you can install a halyard restrainer. Both Harken and Shaefer makes them. I like the simpler Shaefer design.

You can try repeatedly raise and lower the jib. If you are lucky, you may work it loose and bring it down. Well if it doesn't, you know the drill.

Also if bearing is sticky, try to grab furled sail with both hands and rotate to unwind halyard. This works best when someone else grabs bitter end of halyard and gently cracks it like a whip several time toward masthead to help loosen wraped halyard. Good Luck.
