What size halyard used be used to replace main, jib and topping lift. Previous owner may have replaced halyards with incorrect sizes. The previous owner has not used the boat for a while and the lines appear to quite weathered and exposed area show a far amount of mildew. Also, need further help on installation of deck cleats for primarily anchoring. Stern cleats are easy enough, however I am still perplexed with the bow cleats. My 1990 H23 has no cleats what so ever! Not sure how the previous owner sailed to the Channel Islands off of Santa Barbara and anchored. Forward cleats could be placed aft of the anchor locker but that would place then quite far aft of the bow. Is this a problem ? There is not enough room forward of the locker to place the cleats. Backing can not be accessed in this area. The deck area lateral of the locker likewise does not seem to have access to provide adequate backing. The locker seems to butt up to the edge of the hull in this area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Alex

Use the correct size

I can't give you a specific answer but avoid larger than the initial size otherwise the line will bind in the sheaves and turning blocks making it harder to raise and lower sails. My 28.5 had 7/16 when purchased from the previous owner and after I went back to 3/8 the difference was amazing. The sail actually dropped by itself. Bigger is not always better.

Halyards & anchor cleat

5/16 halyards are strong enough but 3/8 are a little easier to handle. Low-stretch Dacron line like Sta-Set gives good performance at reasonable cost. Measure carefully then buy about ten feet more than you think you'll need. Then you can cut off a foot or so off the shackle end of the halyard each season. The halyard won't wear at the same points all the time and you will extend its usable life substantially. As far as the anchor cleat goes, my 88 H23 has a large horn cleat in the middle of the deck just behind the anchor locker. It's larger than the two bow cleats, mounted athwartships and through-bolted with a large backing plate underneath. The nuts are easily accessible overhead in the forepeak. I don't know if it was factory installed, but it's very solid. Peter H23 "Raven"

Anchor cleat

My 86H23 came with a cleat on the port interior of the anchor locker, which I use primarily for docklines. I added another, (larger and heavily backed) in the aft bulkhead of the locker for my anchor. Mark Major s/v Lesismor

Locker bow cleat Peter and Mark

My anchor locker came with only backed U bolt to tie off the bitter end of the rhode. Mark do you find using a cleat inside the locker ackward to use? Is a cleat positioned on the aft bulkhead of the locker as sturdy as one place midship on the deck aft of the locker, assuming the same sized backing is used? Peter, does having the cleat so far aft cause any great chaffing issues when anchored? Secondly, do you ever experience problems with the foresail or its sheets when you tack. I intend to achor in the channnel islands were winds can frequenlty get to 20 -25 knts in some of the open anchorages and am trying to figure out what would be the most secure and effective place for an anchor cleat. Thanks for the advice Alex

Response to Alex

I'm rarely anchored long enough for chafe to be a problem. Any form of anti-chafing protection should work fine. The cleat doesn't foul the headsail or sheets when tacking. It only sticks up about an inch. Peter H23 "Raven"

h23 cleats

The cleat inside the anchor locker is for securing the anchor line. There is a recessed steel pin located at the bow and one on each side at the stern. These are very strong and are for attaching your docking lines. sv Miss Brandy

Bow cleat

I have also been through this peoblem with my H23. I've decided to mount a cleat just aft of the anchor locker and use bow chocks up forward to position the docking lines. I put two cleats on the the stern also, since I was able to get to the bottom side of these. s/v Seas the Moment

How were bow chocks mounted?/ Seas the Moment

How were they mounted. I assume that they were placed without backing if they were placed anywhere foreward or lateral of the locker. Thnaks Alex

Bow chocks

They were placed on each side toward the bow with screws large enough to get a good tight fit (no backing). There is very little pressure on the chocks to pull out since they are simply directing the dock line to the cleat. Your anchor locker must be closed for the lines to come across to the cleat. I found this type arrangement on several different boats and it seemed to work very well for them. Hope this helps. Ernie s/v Seas the Moment
