Halyard sheaves at base of 23.5 mast

Some time ago I removed the pin and sheaves at the base of the mast on my 23.5. The plastic separator between the sheaves was deteriorated and broken and I wanted to replace it. I went to replace the assembly today and realized the sheaves don't turn easily on the shaft. In fact. it is almost impossible to turn one of them with just my hands. The other turns but is very tight. Is this normal?

see if it is any caulk on the sheaves or in the holes of the sheaves which the pin goes thru. You might want to try lightly sanding those holes. Also make sure the pin is not bent either.

Did you take any pictures? I ordered a new sheave separator but it is back ordered. I'll be doing this same job as soon as it arrives.

Bingo, Dave! Apparently a small amount of original caulk left on the pin when I pulled off the sheaves got stuck in the center holes. A good cleaning of the pin and a light sanding of the holes and all is well now. Thanks

Crazy Dave actually helped me drop my mast and while he was on my boat, we talked about Hugh's suggestion. While at the boat we were drew the halyard up to where the mast-based turning block would be and the angle the halyard would take back to the deck-mounted turning blocks created a bad angle to the aluminum frame of the deck-mounted turning blocks. The aluminum frame digs into the halyard line. I worry it would cause too much chafe. Your boat is a little different in dimensions so you could test it yourself before you go that way.

I just walked back in from looking at my boat and came to the same conclusion. Next time I raise the mast, I'm going to attach a block to the mast step and see if the angle at the deck turning block is as bad as it looks like it'll be. If so, I'll be reinstalling the original setup.

BTW, when I was looking to replace my separator, I looked online for local plastic retailers. All I found was a large volume wholesaler in a nearby industrial park but I figured, What the hey? I walked in and met the nicest guy who, after I explained what I was doing, took me back on the shop floor and let me have a couple of 12" by 12" squares of 1/8" thick Tivar 1000 from the scrap bin. It was easy to cut the shape on my scroll saw. I had enough to replace the pieces on either side of my tiller pivot bolt, too.

I called the people who run SBO (this site) and they set me up with a replacement part. They said it was for a 23.5 but believe the part was the same for the H26. I've been a member of this forum for 6 years and have not bought too much stuff here until recently ... I just found the website hard to find what I was looking for... but then I realized, I could call.... and an actual human would answer... and make sure I ordered the right part.... kudos... so lately I've been getting all of my random stuff here.

Before you do take a photo of your mast step so I can see where you are going to attach. If on the mast step itself, just remember it is pot metal.

I don't have this problem (an H23) but I did recently search for plastic stock so I could replace the spacers in the rudder head. I did not try any local plastic supplier, but did find various items in Amazon (also other online sites) and bought a 1/8 thick by 12 by 12 sheet of UHMW polyethylene for maybe $10 plus S&H. They had various other types, like nylon, so this can be a source if you don't find a friendly local wholesaler.

Ok, so after all the discussion and taking a good look at the angles (and taking into account Dave's admonition about the mast step being "pot metal") , I'll be reinstalling the original pin and sheaves. Is there anything I should do to help retain the pin in position? To keep it from sliding back and forth?

I'm still trying to decide how to semi-permanently secure the pin. I am reluctant to use 5200 as all I've heard and read indicates this is an adhesive-for-life product. I may want to remove the pin again someday.

I was wondering how to remove that pin. Did you just use needle nose pliers? If 5200 is holding it in, how hard was it to remove?
