I've owned my 23.5 for 15 years and have put up with the jib and main halyards lying on the starboard side of the cockpit in any fashion they choose. I ordered some line holders a few years ago but they were so big and bulky that I opted not to but them on. Have any of you found a smaller version to install on the bulkhead to keep the halyards out of the way? I owned a 40.5 and it has great storage loops that didn't stick that far away from the bulkhead.

I recently installed two Blue Performance sheet bags. They look great, drain and have a rain protector. You can buy them on this website.

The bags would work, but what I'm looking for are small loops that hold the halyards next to the bulkhead.

Hung neatly on lifelines

We used to coil them up into loops small enough to stuff in the starboard cockpit pocket, but I always hated losing that area for storing the winch handle, handheld VHF, soda bottle, what-have-you.

The admiral has a nifty way to coil up & secure lines she learned as a kid, and I realized we could use it to implement a system that I had originally seen to clean-up the unused part of the lines in a hemp-house theater for their fly system backstage.

I'll try to get a picture this weekend, but basically, we coil the halyard into 1' loops. We take several wraps around the center and leave enough line to push a loop through the top of the coil, grab it on the other side & put the end of the line over the lifeline & though that loop, then pull back down on the line to close the loop tightly on it. Especially with the stopper knot at the end of the halyard, the last part of the line stays inside the loop & holds the coils neatly on the lifeline.

I know it's not explained very well & a picture would be greatly helpful. Maybe I can even do a step-by-step. The end result is a very shipshape-looking, tidy organization of the halyards that don't take up bulkhead or pocket space & are easy to shake out when lowering the sails.

You can catch a glimpse of the mainsheet halyard on the right side of the attached picture.

The previous owners stuck these stick-on line organizers(see pic) on the mast in 2004 and they've worked well ever since. They are pretty convenient for lines that I don't want to wrap up. Drop the hanger line from the groove on the top and the sheet/halyard is ready to go. I suppose you could stick them just about anywhere with a flat spot.

In the cockpit I'd guess that bags are the answer but I found them cumbersome too. I usually just coil a large loop around the winches. Once I hoist the sails I rarely use the winches anyway so it works for me. One look at my line storage situation and you can see my winches aren't doing the job....now about that deck clutter;).

I'll be curious to see what you end up with. Mike
