The shackle broke off my jib halyard line today while sailing. I pulled the sail down and I have a nice looking shackle, but the halyard is up on top of the mast. Not sure what to do. Don't really feel like climbing the mast fearing that I may become deceased. Any ideas would be appreciated. ?????

2 ways....

either someone goes up to the top... or you'll have to bring the top down to you. Since you're afraid yourself, try finding a friend in the marina who'll go up. Or, you might call a rigger and ask what he would charge to do it. Taking the mast down will cost you too much and is much more complicated than having someone hoist you up on a bosun's chair.

Get some kind of hook

like a bent clothes hanger, and tie it to the other halyard. Raise, try messing wround see if you can snag it. Don't forget a downhaul for the halyard with the hook. Stu OR, wait for low tide, go over to a high dock, and see what you can do. With the full moon just over, you should get some really low tides.

Since your halyard parted, maybe it's time to

bite the bullet and hire a rigger to go up and take a look at the rest of the stuff up there. Just a thought...
