I have a 1979 C-22. After raising the main or jib, I find nearly impossible to use the cleats on the mast to secure the halyards. The halyards are 5/16 but the cleats seem too small to accept the line. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe those halyards should be 1/4 inch instead. Any help would be appreciated! *O

If the halyards work, why not simply install larger cleats. Better yet, run the halyards aft to the cockpit, much safer. Look at Pat Royce's Sailboats Illustrated. He has great pictures of exactly what to do with a C22 for line rigging. Stu

I have had the boat for about nine months and I'm restoring it. The halyards were replaced by the previous owner about three years ago..they need replacing now...and I'm thinking they were originally 1/4 inch.

imj Have your tried the C22 National Assoc. website yet? Most of the associations have the manuals posted on their sites. The manuals include th standing and running rigging sizes. It's usually www.c[boat size].org, or www.Catalina[boat size].org. Give it a try. From my recollection of my C22 days, 1/4 seems / sounds a bit light, not so much for strength, but for handling. I just put some new 5/16 line on our boat, and that sounds much more like what I remember. Stu try the link

The C22 manual sez that 5/16" is the spec size for halyards. I have a '75 C22 and just replaced my halyards because I set my boat up for lines lead to the cockpit. My old halyards were 1/4". I agree that the mast cleats are a wee bit small for 5/16" line. If you're content to cleat off on the mast instead of leading the lines back to the cockpit, then I think the least expensive way to go is to buy larger jam cleats for the mast. As a side note, my old halyards were lead thru cheek blocks at the base of the mast, which allowed me to pull up on the halyards when hoisting the sails, and then jam the halyard into the cleat before wrapping the line. It was a good set-up, but not as good as having the halyards lead back to the cockpit.

They actually need to be replaced anyway...so I'll run them back to the cockpit. I was just curious if anyone else thought those cleats were a bit small. 1/4 inch line would fit those cleats but I'm thinking its kinda small for the job. Thanks for the input guys!
Before you remove them...
Check the C22 owners manual. You can get it online via the C22 Association web page. Those smaller cleats on the mast might be used for the reefing line. See the diagram on the standard set-up for reefing.

I left mine on
My halyards come back to the cockpit as do the reefing line and cunningham. I left the two cleats on the mast, though, just in case my cam cleats should ever fail. I could then cleat the halyards to the mast cleats just to get by. Randy

Who cares about halyards now??
Wow...just a few days ago I was worrying about halyards...now it doesn't matter much. My boat was severely damaged by my neighbor's boat during a storm last week. I am afraid I won't be sailing it anytime soon. I'll post a pic on the forum under "SECURE THOSE DOCKLINES!"
