I recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 25.5 and have a question on the location of halyards. Both my halyards, jib and main, exit the mast on the starboard side then turn 90 degrees aft under the pop top to the stopper. It all looks like it came from the factory that way, basically original stuff. My problems are: 1) the halyards scrape the aft part of the pop top before entering the stopper. It's fraying my halyards and the pop top. It seems like a bad design. Does anyone else experience this problem? 2) The stoppers have released a few times underway and my sails dropped. The stoppers look like they are wearing out quickly. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks all. Bob

No problem for me....

Bob. I have an 86' 25.5 with the same arrangement, and I have never had a problem with my halyards or clutches. I took my clutches apart, cleaned, and lubricated them, but that is all. I have never had any problem with chafing of the lines with the pop-top. Good luck.

25.5 Halyards

I have never had the problem you mention on my 25.5. The clutch is low enough to avoid the top completely. If the clutch halyyard entry were too high, that would create the problem. My dual clutch is attached directly to the fiberglass with nothing between the two but bedding compound. Assuming you have the original clutch in the original installed position, might take a look at the junction of the cabin top and pop top. My 25.5 has a rubber gasket that seals the two when closed. I really don't know if that effectively raises the pop top a little or not. It is possible that the loss of the gasket would allow the top be too low in the down position to allow line clearance. If your gasket is not gone, the clutch must simply have the entry point for the halyards too high. If that is the case, might need to locate a replacement. If you think your clutch is not an original, compare the height of the halyard entry with a 25.5 tht does not have the problem. That would give you something to work with.

Lines through the clutches

The halyards run out of the mast, through the sheeves on the deck and directly aft UNDER the pop-top to the clutches. The lines feed through the BOTTOM of the clutches with the lever sticking straight up. Make sure that the lines run correctly through the clutches. Have a look at some of the advertisements on clutches to make you have them set up right. Also check to make sure you're using 3/8" rope for the halyards. If they have been replaced by a smaller size, the clutches might not lock down on the line. The clutches and halyards on our 84 25.5 are factory original. Everything works just fine.
