Nice looking splice. I did my first 3 strand nylon anchor rode splice a month or so ago. I had to do it a few times to finally get it right. I haven't worked up the courage to do the double braid. I bought a main sheet and had them do it. Next one I buy I will do the double braid myself. Post some pics of the fid you used it you would. Did you buy or make your own fid?

Did you lock stitch the splice before whipping it???
If you mean pull the sheath through the core then pull it all inside the sheath at the eye, well then yes. I did it without a fid (used my wife's crochet hook), but now I know better. I'll probably use it a while then make the splice a bit longer.
I have everything for the masthead just waiting for an opportunity to travel to the yard.

No. A lockstitch is when you sew through the splice to anchor the inner and outer braid layers together. This should be done on all double braid eye splices IMHO.

Start by passing about half of a fid's length of line through the splice at the base of the eye. You should have a half-a-fid's length of twine or so on either side of the line.

Stitch along one side of the rope four about five diameters in length, along the spliced section.

Turn the line 90˚ and stitch the other half-a-fid's-length of line back along the line in a row of stitches that are perpendicular to the first line of stitches.

Tie off the two ends.

The first pass locks the braids together in the horizontal plane, the second does it in the vertical plane as seen in the last drawing.

Thanks Sailingdog, will do. Some time you'll have to show me how you got a little message box inside a big box from different posts (topping lift from Hermit).
