I noticed that 2 of the regular contributors to this forum had pictures in the current edition of Lats 'n Atts magazine. Dick Dixon, who provided us northern sailors with picture/video compilations to get us through the winter, has a nice pic of a raft up at dawn. Tim Welsh, who sails in Arkansas, has a pic of his Hunter, Cabo Wabo. I also know that another contributor, Warren Millberg out of the Chesapeake has had several articles and pictures in Good Old Boat magazine. When I see those articles and pictures, I kinda felt proud, like they are friends. Have you received your 15 minutes of semi-fame? Has anybody else been "published" in a magazine? A picture that I took of my daughter was in Lats 'n Atts, a picture taken from my boat by another was in Lat's 'n Atts and 2 or 3 issues ago I had my pic in there as well (look for the large group of BVI sailors in matching light blue "team" shirts. I'm the tall one in the back). It seems like we all frequent the same places. Tom s/v Orion's Child

Well that makes pic #6

Hey Tom, I haven't got my newest Issue yet, now I'll be on pins and needles waiting for it to arrive. Is it a pic with the spinnaker up? I've contibuted alot of pictures hoping for a cover but bob told me not enough deck fluff. Then I sent in a couple deck fluff pics and he said he liked the picks but they were a little too revealing. Tom....

You must be talking about the April edition of Lats & Ats...right? If so, it hasn't arrived in the mail yet...I'll be looking for it. Honestly, I love sailing and I cherish the people who love it. While an outsider might argue that true sailors are some of the best people to know and associate with, to me sailors like those on this website are genuine people, the kind of people to know and trust. You and all the others here are like family, family with whom I want to share the joys and excitement of sailing. Oh sure, some may be strange characters with quirky ideas and opinions. But they are still sailors who, like most of us, enjoy the fellowship this forum offers. Thank you and the others who have posted nice comments about the videos I have presented. I offered them as tokens of friendship and as a way to spread my joy and passion for sailing. And as anyone who knows me personally will say, I try to help fellow sailors whenever I can to enjoy this sport as I truly do. Stay tuned for more as I gather new material and broaden my skills and ideas. Dick Dixon s/v CD EXPRESS

Tim, Yes

It's the pic with the red spinnaker up. I think I've seen it before. How's your swim platform project going? Planning on starting a side business? Tom

Dick,

After watching your movies and seeing how nice they turned out, I found and downloaded the Movie Maker software and I'm working on one of my own as time permits. Next toy........a digital video camera! Tom

Thanks, Tom

Sailors really are good people -- and we are a relatively small community. Next to actually sailing, I love writing about sailing. I'm hoping to get back into the water in about 2 weeks, if Ma Nature cooperates. Hope to see you on the water one of these days!

Has anybody seen the boating commercial?

it shows a family driving in a SUV and waving at people in gas station, nobody waves back. Then they drive by a realtor's office and wave again. The realtor turns and lowers the shades. Then it show people on a boat and everyone is waving to each other. The ad then says that boaters are a friendly group of people. I don't know who does this commercial on the tube, but it caught my eye. I have seen it three times now and still can't figure out who sponsors it. Great ad. And sail/boaters are a special breed for sure. Maybe it's the love of all things natural? Ya think? Keep it up, Ctskip

I hate to disagree, but I'm going to anyway. I have long ago been disabused of the notion that sailors are uniformly a great group of people, a close knit community. Sailors are a cross section of people in general, there are all types. Some are friendly, some helpful, some curmudgeonly, some snobby, some downright abusive (right up to the borderline of what passes the monitors). If this site has the appearance of overall friendliness, it's only because the number of posters is far less than the number of readers, which is far less than the actual number of sailors. What sailing has is a quality much like soccer (football elsewhere). It's advocates are fanatically in love with their activity. A fellow sailor is somehow a kindred spirit, even if he/she is a real sob in all other respects.

SpinSheet, too

Warren Milberg is also a contributing writer for the regional Chesapeake Bay pub "SpinSheet" and has had a number of interesting articles there, too. It really is a small world.... If more people sailed, we'd have a calmer, gentler, world IMHO.

Phil no matter what organization

one happens to belong to ,there are not so nice people. In the boating world, we are amongst the few. We stand above most of the population. "cross section of the general population" NOT. The average person does not own a boat. Maybe wihes to own one. We are generally of higher IQ than the average person. I'd be willing to say that we are of higher income and education than the average person. I'd be willing to bet that we are also friendlier than most, especially when on the water. Of course this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Until I've seen differently. Keep it up, Ctskip

Ctskip - Above Average

Ctskip - I couldn't help but read your post and hear Garrison Keillor talking about sailors “where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking and all the children are above-average.” ;) T J

I got mine!

I was thrilled when I had two articles published in "Northern Breezes" magazine. You can read them online at http://www.sailingbreezes.com/ Look for July 2006 "Summer of Swagman" and January 2007 "Black River Cruise" Not to be cynical but I do tend to agree with Phil about the types of people involved in sailing. There are all kinds, like anywhere else. What I love about sailors is having sailing in common. It makes for a bond like almost nothing else. As far as being above average, well I'm kind of average. Barely finished high school, completely lacking in imagination and not known for being any kind of intellectual giant among my crowd. However, I'm a lot of fun at a party.

Had My 15 Minutes...

But not having anything to do with sailing. Maybe in the future. I was quoted in Network World magazine several years ago, but that's about it. I must be a legend in my own mind.

15 divided by 3

I've had three articles in Latts and Atts, thus the "15÷3". All three found there way to the "Dumb Things Sailors Do" department. I think I hold the record for max hits in that category. I'm not done yet - there are docks to hit, Admirals to leave behind, and did I tell you about the time I filled Diesel into my holding tank?

Does that qualify as fame or notoriety? It takes a big man to 'fess up to dumb things. Keep at it, I'm sure you can top 'em. It seems the Princess of the Lake has her priorities straight! Tom

Not in the sailing community...

But I have written a book on biasing tube amplifiers. It was geared toward guitar players who want to maintain their own tube amps. It was a step-by-step document complete with pictures.

BrianD, can you still buy vacuum tubes?

I left the electronics business almost 35 years ago and solid state electronics was taking over the whole field.

For many, Ross...

Vacuum tubes produce the best audio sound. But for guitarist, tube saturation in the finale amplifier produce a sweet distortion that solid state transistors cannot. Yep, tubes can still be had.
