All Car Stuff, No Boats Yet

I've had my show cars featured in magazines in the 1980's. It was pretty cool at the time. It's nice to have others like the art you create. When I was dirt track racing in the 1990's I had a few opportunities to do radio interviews and autograph sessions. That was really cool, kids love autographs. I've signed autographs for people that followed my racing as far away as Australia and South Africa. It makes the world seem smaller somehow. These things make life more fun and sure make you feel good. JerryA

I had my 15 minuets several times starting with my first offshore sailing trip when I was thirteen and by fifteen I had sailed solo from RI to Nova Scotia in an unpowered 22 foot sailboat. Those trips made the papers and it was a lot of fun. But my first international splash was my first solo trans-Atlantic in a 22 foot boat in 1974. I was greeted on arrival by the Lord Mayor of Falmouth and signed the guest book just a few pages away from Robert Manley’s signature after his crossing in the 13 foot Tinkerbelle. That trip made the news in a big way and I did some talk shows and even did an appearance on the TV game show To Tell the Truth. Having my obituary published in newspapers world wide because of a failed trip in 1976 was a kick and it lead to a book being published about all my sailing up to that point. Lots of trips since then and some of them even get a mention in the press but I guess the highlight at this point is my name appearing in Richard Henderson’s 2nd edition of his book Singlehanded Sailing: The Experiences and Techniques of the Lone Voyagers. I had to buy a copy just to see if I was an example of how not to do it. But it turns out that I am only included as a name in his “Honor Role” of singlehanded sailors. Still it’s nice to see my name listed among all the great names even if the only reason for being in the list is the fact I haven’t died yet in spite of some of my trips.My most recent 15 minutes was a write up in a newspaper just lat fall. We had a public launching for my most recent small boat design. A small sailboat designed for construction by school children. The boat is also intended to used as teaching boat in the sailing school.All the best,Robert Gainer

New England Sailing Mag

I had my boat's (Legend 37) picture shown in a now-defunct mag called New England Sailing. I submitted it to a contest and it won. I was then shown the following month in the mag about 2 years' ago. I currently have the same picture set up as my avatar on this site. It was taken by Bob Lester (Presque Isle, ME) from a companion boat as we were rounding Cape Small on the coast of Maine - south of Sebasco, Maine and headed for Boothbay Harbor.

Tom, I am in All the news that fits section

I will have a fairly regular spot called Cruzin' Tunes. I am on page 26 this month.Boat Babe is in there pretty often these days, mainly because of her pretty toes...I wonder if most people know you can buy it electronically in pdf form. I am not a tree hugger, but it just makes sense these days. Unless of course you read it in a location what will not accomodate a computer.....Get a Laptop!

Bob, I found it last night when I finally had a few minutes to go through the mag. I usually go to the "Underway" section as soon as I get it then I read through the rest of it as I get time.Tim, yeah, that's the picture. When I sat in front of my 'puter yesterday I just couldn't be sure what it was. I was thinking Grand Caymans (Gun Cay, close!) but I also remembered Bahamas. I'm going to the Bahamas in May for a 2.5 week sail and I though maybe that was clouding my memory. I decided to be safe and go generic and say "Carribean" which is untrue seeing as how the Bahamas are in the Atlantic. Oh well, so much for short term memory.Tom
