We are taking delivery of a new 46 soon. I just looked at the anchor rode and chain combination that comes with the boat, and it looks a little wimpy to me. Does anyone know the chain size of the standard gypsie? 3/8"BBB sticks in my mind but I can not find any written information in the owners manual. Appreciate the information in advance.

Go To CW...

...and describe the length and displacement of your boat. There are a number of people there who are very knowledgable about anchor tackle. But they will all recommend against BBB chain. Two other things: there are different gypsy sizes for different size chain, so you might have to consult with the windlass maker to find what they require for your specific unit; and, unfortunately, if you don't mention that your boat is a Hunter, you'll get a more friendly and helpful response.

I had the same concerns at delivery time. Once the boat came, I removed the gypsy and took it to my chanlery. We thus made sure that my desired chain fit properly. I have 200 feet of chain and 25 feet of rode. The rode is spliced on one end to the chain and tied to the windlass support beam on the other.

460 Windlass

As I recall it, the windlass takes 5/16" chain. If you use high tensile chain, it gives adequate holding.

Anchor Chain on Hunter 460

Hi Jim: The chain size on my Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500 Windlass is 5/16" G4 as described in the Simpson Lawrence Marine catalog. My wndlass has a RC 172 gypsy with 7 pockets. I am not sure if any other size chain will fit the gypsy. I suggest you call the Simnpson Lawrence factory rep. Best Wishes, Maxwell Blanchard desertsage@mindspring.com

Anchor chain on H460

The chain on my H460 is a 5/16" G4 per Simpson Lawrence catalog. It matches the Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500 Windlass with a RC 172 gypsy. The gypsy has 7 pockets. I am not sure if the gypsy will accept any other chain size. Best Wishes, Maxwell Blanchard desertsage@mindspring.com
