Am thinking about replacing my grunert ac fridge with something more efficient. I was figuring on not rebuilding the boxes, just replacing the hardware.

I am wonder what other people have done?

thanks!!

Why? If it is working, let it be. You'll never find a better refrigeration system. While the system does draw a massive amount of current when running, my draws about 29 amps, it doesn't run very often, maybe once every 10-12 hours for about a half hour.

I have one and I dread the day something breaks and I have to replace it. That opinion is also shared by the captain of the Pride of Baltimore II.

I must have something going on, it works kinda well, freezer doesn’t get quiet as cold as I would anticipate it to, runs 15-17 min 2-4 time s a day in Alaska.

At 30 amp draw for 30 -60 minutes a day, that's less than 30 ah. That is pretty efficient when compared to other units. The one minor downside is chilling a warm box. It takes a while to get the cold plates cold enough to chill the box. But once those cold plates are cold it is pretty efficient. Because it runs infrequently it is possible to plan the chill cycle and have it run when the motor is running to reduce battery drain.

We acquired a portable fridge/freezer (a freebee, Alpicool brand) that I thought would be an energy hog that would not work well enough to waste the power on, but I was wrong. We used it as a freezer on a 33-day trip to Maine and I have to say the thing worked great and did not use much power at all. We set it at -4 degrees and it kept everything frozen very nicely. The best part, it was free. It works on 12-volt or 120 and is very quiet. These things can be had for 3-4 hundred dollars and in my opinion are worth a look.
