I have spent over 2 years on and off trying to fix my fridge seals- I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I recently replaced the freezer lid seal with identical dimension'ed soft rubber to the original seal- I have added a latch to lock the freezer lid seal down tight- but STILL I am getting a rapid frost build up on my eutectic tanks- as well as condensation on my freezer lid.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to I can ;
find the source of the leak?
fix the bloody leak!
HELP!!!!:doh::doh:

I have done all the same. I even pulled the panel by the stove to possibly add insulation but no room for more. I just have to frequently defrost.

Put a small rubber plug or cork in the drain hole at the bottom of the refrig/freezer to keep the heavy cold air from draining into your bilge - thus drawing damp cabin air into the refrig/freezer and frosting up your plates

I pulled the inside part of the top of our freezer off and found the insulation foam had broken down and was in crumbles. Refoamed it and it helped some. But we still have the same problems you do

The biggest difference I made in the frost time was to take the latches out and just let the weight hold themselves down.

I could see that helping if the hinges were installed even a little to far up. The hinges could be carrying the weight and not letting the seal compress...

Interesting. Why does that help?
I think it just made sure that the lid was all way down and the weight was fully applied to the seal. There isn't really anyway to know those plastic latches are set right. I had long figured out if 1 of the 2 got messed up that leakage would increase. So finally I just took them off and there isn't anything keeping the lid from laying all thee way down.

P42 Reefers

The two reefers on our 1991 still do the job. Fridge keeps the beer cold and the freezer freezes water for ice along with other stuff. Here is what I did, but whether it helps, I'm not sure to what degree.

1. The original grey lid seal material still seems to work, but to help I added the self sticking foam 1/4" weather stripping on top of the grey material. That seems to have closed some gaps. I used the dollar bill test and it did show some spots where the lid was not making a solid seal.

2. As was mentioned earlier I inserted two small sink plugs into where the reefers drain into the shower sump. The purpose is to stop any air flow into or out of the reefer boxes. I remove the plugs periodically to let out a very small amount of water.

3. The freezer does accumulate a small amount of frost around the cold plate that builds up during the course of a year. I usually shut off, empty and clean out both units at the beginning of the season just so things remain fresh smelling.

4. I cut a piece of that 1/2" plastic wire coil stuff that some use under their bedding to allow air to keep moisture from forming and placed it against the wall in just the upper freezer section. It seems to help allow cold air between the freezer wall and foods so that foods remain frozen on both sides.

Our original AB units are on 24/7 year around. So far they still do the job. I had the freezer recharged when we took possession in 2002 and the fridge control module replaced DIY in 2003. I make it a practice of pushing down on the lid after closing just to make sure the lid seals.

Both the fridge and freezer on my 1991 passage 42 work well, but my freezer ices up a lot. I removed the latches on the freezer because they kept freezing and not letting the lid close. I also removed the gas struts on both lids. I replaced the seals on both lids and the refrigerator door. I also have plugs in the drains, and keep bottles of water in the freezer to reduce air space. The refrigerator just frosts a little, but the freezer ices up after a few weeks. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Our original compressors work great. Have a flat plate evaporator in the fridge that only ices a little but can freeze everyhing in the fridge if turned down. Freezer ha th powerplate in it. It ices alot and fast. I replaced seals but still have the problem. Surprisingly the small fan I added to blow across the holding plate (great addition as now the entire freezer holds at around 5 to 10 degrees) actually helps keep the ice buildup down where it blows.

thought I had it!

The manufacturer of my fridge gave me a tip in relation to finding leaking fridge/freezer seals and I thought I had it fixed - but - NO!!!!
He suggested a very bright rechargeable torch placed in the freezer and fridge facing the lids and door- wait until really dark at night and with the lid closed you can certainly see where the leaks are with light showing through around the edge where it was not sealed- so fixed that so it was as black as- but after 2 days with power back on - same large amount of condensation on lid and frost build up on eutectic plates!
Back to the drawing board- I will beat this!! :evil::doh::snooty::redface:
