H41DS decoupling shaft while floating

Gearbox output shaft seal is leaking. I’ve done many seals like this but never with a shaft connected to a big bronze weight that could yank $3k worth of hardware into the bay & sink a $150k boat. So, a little more nervous than usual. Anybody done this? I have a brand new stuffing box (not a dripless catastrophe seal).

Not done that, but there are Shaft collar locks to stop shaft loss.

But remember you must make sure of proper re-alignment when done.

For a cheap shaft collar use a zinc.

FYI, after I wasted several hours in the sling watching some dumb kid screw up two easy tasks (no diy allowed in Gig Harbor anymore), they splashed me & I had to separate the shaft from the gearbox (to fix dude’s 3rd mistake). So, I can now answer my original question. Yes, this can be done at the dock.
