We were out yesterday on our 2 month old H410 enjoying a lazy sail in 12 knots and calm seas. Did a real eeeeeeeasy gybe and heard a loud crack. The casting on the mast plate for the Seldon rod kicker broke off. Would really like to know how other H410 owners are controlling their booms - hard or soft vangs, preventers, rod kickers or.... No Preventer
Interesting question. We have the P 42. On our old H C37, I always used a preventer downwind, but our preventer was also our vang. It would hook onto the toerail. easy to use. With the B&R rig on the P42 and the hard vang, I have never used a preventer, although I have thought about it some. With the B & R rig, we tack downwind more and dont sail 180 off the wind much. I am also not sure how to rig a preventer conveniently. I have not had a surprise jib in 3 years of sailing it, but it could happen.

broken vang bracket
We had the same problem on our new 340 on our first sail. we tightend the vang and eased off the wind when the bracket on the mast pulled out and broke. The dealer gave us a huge wrap around the mast bracket that seems to work fine now we wory about the boom attatchment failing. Large mainsails need bigger hardware! Andy and Leslie

Sounds like you are doing it right.
Sounds like you did everything fine, but you have an defective part or a poor installation. Vang attachments shouldn't crack and preventers won't help. Nothing wrong with rigid vangs either. Get it replaced and take a good look at the installation to make sure it is up to snuff.

vang pulled out of mast twice!
Our 430 is in charter in BVI. All of them have had the same problem with the vang breaking out of the mast, pulling the rivets thru the drill holes in the mast. Sounds like the bracelet bracket is the answer. We'll see.

The best item of extra equipment I fitted to my H42 was a Scott Boomlock.This is a simple piece of gear to fit and to operate.No more uncontrolled gybes and downwind sailing is so peaceful with no boom banging away in light wind and and a quartering sea.Definately to be recommended.Their telephone number is 1684 311981 and the address isScott Desing,Hanley Castle,WorcesterWR8 0BJ (England).They may have an agent in U.S.A.

I have had no problems with my performance vang so far. But you might have the vang to tight or loose. Mess areound with that! Chandler
