Does anyone know the real issue behind the chain plate recall on the 410. Mine is being refotted as I write this. Will this affect the resale value of the boat? Has anyone else had theirs refitted? Jake s/v Offline jroquet@earthlink.net

410 recall

jake, My 98 410 will be retrofitted while on the hard this winter. Can only speculate about the real cause of the recall. Hunter claims there has been no problems with the 410, however given the massiveness of the new chainplates and the fact that the old ones only tied into the deck and not the hull, my guess is they're trying to preclude a problem before it occurs. Just a guess. My guess on the resale value is that it would only be affected if the upgrade were not done. Bryce S/V Spellbinder

mine's been done

I'm thrilled with the new plates. They look fabulous, and are exponentially more stout than the previous system. The work took two riggers about four hours to complete, with no major impact to the interior of the boat. Sweet. I'd be much more worried about selling the boat without the new chainplates than with.

more 410 recall info

My 410 chainplates have been replaced, and like John, I feel the new ones are visually asthetic and certainly much stronger with 4 large carriage bolts and about three times the area of chain plate. This came about as a result of one 420 rig failure. Note that the Coast Guard has issued a recall on the 420 chainplates. Hunter included 410's voluntarily as it's the same hull and rig. The problem apparently was that some of the chainplates were not grabbing into enough of the thickened, reinforced fiberglass area glassed in for this purpose. If one of the bolts loosened, tension on the rig would result in lateral sawing movement of the chainplate with a gradual routering out the the area around the chainplate. This apparently has only happened on one boat, and I think Hunter did an excellent job of taking care of a potential problem with a good solution. Chris Webb Boca Grande, Fl.

420 recall

Last month's Boat U.S. publication listed the recall of certain H420 boats for chainplate repair. I assume (you know what that means) that the involved serial number boat owners have been notified. I no longer have the Boat U.S. magazine but suggest any interested parties contact Hunter as to whether their particular hull number boat was involved. I believe (from memory) that it involved 420's manufactured from some time in 1998 to some time in 1999. Hunter notified 410 owners of the voluntary recall by certified mail, and I suspect this was likely the case with 420's. The Boat U.S. magazine lists all boat recalls for the U.S. Hunter in my opinion has been very proactive about this issue, and I'm certain they can clear the air about any involved 420's. Also, if anyone out there still has this publication, perhaps they can post the exact wording of the recall. Chris Webb Boca Grande, Fl.

Thanks

Thanks Chris and Bryce, I have a 2000 420 delivered in February 2000. Toward the end of the season last year I noticed shavings on the port side galley counter top, after heavy weather. The dealer checked it out and found no problem. Could you please describe what your chainplate looked like before and after the fix? I will of course check my serial number against the list, but I have not received any info on this from either Hunter or the dealer.

new chainplate

the old chainplate on my 410 stopped at the rub rail. it appears to only be bolted to the deck. The new one goes approximately 10 inches below the rub rail and is bolted to both the hull and the deck. The retrofit requires some removal of material around the hull-deck joint for the chaiplate to fit into place. If this isn't clear enough, I can try some pics when I get back to the yard. Bryce

Thanks Bryce

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Pics wont be necessary. The plates on my boat extend below the rail. Also, Hunter let me know that my boat was not subject to the recall. (Thanks Eddie!)
