Thanks for the advice Marco! I was recently reading about going with nylon thru-hulls as they don't contribute to electrolysis.
I did have another concern, As this boat has sat for 4+ years in it's original cradle completely unused, should there be something in particular I should be concerned about due to this? Of course I'm having a survey done but I was wondering if there can be negative effects oh a boat sitting on the hard for such a long time. She still looks brand new. 171hrs on the Yanmar

Well, 171 hrs on the engine sounds fantastic. I'm not a specialist in engines and other technical equipment normally found on boats, but what ever engine, gear or motor, they are designed to run. I would take a very close look at the engines, refrigerator compressors, the generator etc. Not moving for 4 years can damage these things. It depends on how everything has been conserved before it when to storage. Seals from the fridge, hoses etc. can dry out and could start leaking shortly after being used again. What about the running gear (halyards etc.) on deck?
Pick a very good surveyor for the boat and an even better one for the engine, Gen. set etc.!
Here is a fantastic site for many different common issues on boats … It provides several how-to instructions and test results on sea cock installation.

Good luck!

Thanks Marco! The bushing seemed to be in good shape, but we haven't had a survey yet.

I went and took a look at the boat again today, the broker was out but that never stops me. I was told by a friend who looked at this boat a year ago that it was struck by lightening 3 times and told them not to buy it. Considering the broker, I'm skeptical of the claim. I emailed the listing broker to get to the bottom of it. I'm wondering if this is true, if all of the electrical works, what other things do I need to look out for that can be damaged by a lightning strike?

Dick,
I have no experiences with lightning strikes on a boat. But there are several posts in this forum about it. Most lukely it will cause severe damage to electronics, battery charger, alternator and, depending on where it struk, standing rigging, hull etc.
Get a survey if you think the story with the lighning strike is not true. Else I would go on and look for another boat.
Good luck

I would think the survey would show any problems and also mention the lightening strikes when getting the survey done.
Living in Florida I do know friends who have had more than a few lightening strikes and they seem to replace electronics and go sailing again.

I've owned a 1998 Hunter 410 and currently own a 2000 Hunter 410 and can speak well of both boats. I live three months each summer on Sailstarr and as I don't own a slip, I actively use her all summer. Concerning refrigeration, the refrigeration unit in the 2000 model works much better than the '98 year. I pre-load the freezer with 4 10 lb. ice blocks all sealed in one large bag. I still have to defrost but the moisture does not emanate from ice blocks. If you're looking for a good, well priced 410, there is one for sale located exactly in front of my boat on the hard this winter at Walstrom Marine in Cheboygan Michigan. It's listed on YachtWorld with Dilworth brokerage through Boyne City Mi.

There are a few in the area. Each one has many appealing features. The cheapest is in the best condition from what I can tell.

Depends on how direct a hit. Anything from minor electrial damage to holes through the hull.

I'm hoping if the lighting rumor is true that the hull is ok. Only some fixture fail to function and the could be due to many reasons. Can a survey tell if there is strike damage to the hull?

So you might think I can get a pretty good deal? The listing broker said I won't pay more than $100k for it. BoatUs values it at between 99k-119k and NADA claims anywhere between 74k and 84k.

From what I understand the boat hasn't been in the water in 6 years. I worry about the refer, engine and other systems that will be surveyed.

if a boat has been unused for 6 years the owner knows they need to get rid of it, offer an amount low enough that you can get the stuff repaired and then make it contingent on a survey

Thanks for the advice!
From what I understand he is quite old and in poor health, living in his Florida home. A contingent survey is my top priority along with a thorough survey. He dropped the price 5k over the summer but that isn't going to cut it. Several people have told me to offer no more that 75k for my first offer. If he doesn't sell it to me the estate will. It's been listed for 4+ years.

I absolutely love my 2000! As with any boat - there were some minor "issues." My propane solonoid cuts off the flow after 10 minutes or so and should be replaced ($80.) My refrigeration didn't keep things cold anymore and I had to recharge the refrigerant ($100.) Other than that - the boat is a dream! I frequently see 8.5 knots on my speedo. Great boat!
