Having to replace batteries has solved another issue, bilge odor. There was a build up of primordial ooze under the shelve supporting the batteries. This in the bilge compartment immediately aft of the main bilge (just forward of the companionway steps). It does not connect to the main bilge and therefore builds up, becomes stagnant and smells. There is a hole on the aft side of bulkhead separating the two, but no hole on the forward side.

Question: is the solution as simple as just drilling a hole from the main bilge to the aft one?

I had a 1998 H410 and currently have a 2000 H410. Both have had a small drain hole from the large bilge area aft to the compartment under the Battery "box" area. It's hard to see but if you get a small stiff wire or small screw driver you may find that you have one. Good luck.

Thanks Mariner and Tantor. I have found what appears to be a small rough opening on the aft end of the forward bilge and a large hole on the foreword side of the battery box bilge, but there is no flow through it. I will bite the bullet and drill another hole. Drilling holes below the waterline is always a little intimidating.

After reading the original post, I was curious what the bilge under my battery looked like. This past weekend I removed the battery and shelf and found a wet solid material that completely covered the keel bolt nuts. Both bilge areas have holes that allow water to pass between them, but for some reason this large amount of material settled in the aftmost bilge area. Thanks for sharing this information with us, otherwise I probably wouldn't have looked in this area. If anyone wants to see photos of what I found, please visit http://svctime.blogspot.com/p/port.html.

Snows, I enjoyed your blogspot. Of particular interest are the companionway doors. High on my to do list. I replaced my light bulbs with LEDs. I found that by removing the reflectors that I had room to mount round LED disc and it does not affect the amount of because the disc fills the entire lens of the original lights. One problem that I did find is that the LEDs had two sizes of pins. The thick ones didn't fit. Just a word of caution to check the diameter of the pins when making your purchase.
