I have a 1988 hunter 40 and it has the same elbow. I haven't had any problems with mine but was thinking of removing and inspecting it before going South. Have you had an issue with yours?

Yes Doug I was replacing it and ordered a new elbow from Yanmar. They sent a 3 inch model and it appears that was the standard issue in their books but the entire exhaust from new (Hunter installed) is 2 inch. Is yours 2 inch? You can see in the earlier picture a very faint crack as indicated by the rust stain which is why I am changing it. You do need to pull them off and clean the inside gunk every 500 hours or so and they get thinner as a consequence.

I measured mine and it is 2" as well. It looks to be in good shape with no visible cracks. My engine has just turned 900 hrs this year and I had planed on doing some maintenance work to it this winter. I will take the elbow into a rad shop and get them to soak it in there tank to clean it out.
Just wondering how you will deal with a 3" elbow. Will you change the hoses or reduce it back down to 2"?

Will return the 3 inch and get the correct 2 inch part Doug. Yanmar have found it. Too big a job to go to 3 inch, new water lock and all sorts to consider. My engine has in excess of 3500 hours so can't complain about the longevity of the part.

The two inch elbow discussed was a fit issue, some owners opened the breathing back up with larger 3" exhaust hose and elbow to get back the rated 40 horsepower, (The 2" exhaust probably robs 2-3 hp in mostconfigurations). Probably also starves the engine a little bit of air contributing to running a bit rich.
