H40.5 Forward Head sump circuit shorted.

I have a '95 Hunter 40.5 and have just replaced the sump in the forward head.
Seems there is a short somewhere between the switch on the vanity and the pump.
I removed one of the wires from the pump and it still draws 50A when the switches are closed.

The switch appears ok and there is nothing obvious with which it could short.

I assume I need to replace the switch-to-pump wire, any advice how to route as it seems like a pre-assembly
task...

or, any clues where to look for the short?

Your main DC breaker is 50 Amp.

well, the panel meter goes to 50 A for a second before the sump breaker trips. It's a brand new pump AND after seeing a problem, I took it out of the circuit to isolate the issue. ( OK - only the brown wire was connected.) I'd expect a short to draw more than a bad pump.. and of course, an open to draw nothing.

Jim, thanks for that drawing; I didn't have that one. Where did you get it? not in any of my manuals. (got it in your link)

I have a suspicion that the problem may be in the sump where an over zealous cable tie could have
cut the insulation. At least this is a fairly non-invasive inspection.

We always use the old wire as the thread for the new one.
Too difficult to pull the new wire behind the liners and cabinets.

What type of shower drain sump do you have?

I just got this one to replace one of mine that was broken for other reasons.

Ok, I’m to give you a wonderful piece of advice. Get rid of these pumps,
Invest in Whale IC with remote heads,
Yo will never have :
Blockages, intermittent running, selective discharge, cleaning out filthy hair clumps.
Just do it.

About 2" back into the conduit was an insulation "repair" that consisted of electrical tape and heat shrink tubing filled with glue. (This shoddy work is not consistent with the previous owner's MO.) It was an easy fix.

The two products recommended here look great. Since this shower has been used maybe twice in the last year, I'll probably not invest in a premium for this sump. For the main shower, OTOH...
