Wow, that quite a story.

Having just done a re-alignment I am amazed that the adjusting nuts could "back off". I suppose anything is possible, but with the initial tightness of the nuts and the paint/slight corrosion on the threads it seems unlikely.

However, I won't second guess someone with eyes on the situation, and I can't come up with another senerio.

Was there any damage to the strut itself? If there was enough force to break the cutlass, I would be looking at the strut very carefully.

The strut itself appears to be fine. I shut things down pretty fast, so it looks like we are going to be ok. The shaft is the only issue. The key snapped and the coupler kept going, so the shaft could have been scored by the set screws. But that is still better than having to pull the transmission for a rebuild. Either way, looks like we are back in the water by the end of the week.

Are you going to pull the shaft and check it for bends? Any damage to the stuffing box itself?

The shaft gets pulled Monday and off to a shop to check it. I have a PSS shaft seal and it seems ok, but I'm having it pulled and checked. While the shaft is out, the engine gets realigned and the bottom will be painted. With a little luck, we are back in the water on Thursday.

Only issue will be the shaft. If it is shot, I'll have to get a new one. But that shouldn't slow things down.

Thanks, Chris. I'm really looking for more detail than a block diagram can show. I'm looking for specific wiring- color of wires, specific connection points, etc. that will show the boat wiring and the Volvo wiring.

BTW, Volvo only seems to provide block diagrams of their instrument panel and while it shows relays and the ignition switch, it doesn't offer a clue about which switch contacts get closed or opened in any of the positions. Similarly the relays don't indicate which pins are the coil and which are contacts.
