Spring has sprung in the Carolinas and took a break from working on the interior refit. Floor is done, front cabin, head and main cabin done. Now starting on the galley. Where to shoehorn the microwave, formica laminate or corian counter top?? Many decisions.

I looked at my mast and decided to start ordering parts. I do have several questions that I am sure many of you can help me with.
Here it goes:

Looks like the furler needs attention. I dont know the maker and therefore cannot start looking for parts. Looking at the enclosed picture, is there additional parts missing of the bottom of the drum?? Is it too old to find parts for it?? Looks like the decal said CRUISING DESING, however I did not find any manufacturer logo or name on it. Does it look familiar to any of you??

I have several blocks that have broken or destroyed spools.(sheave?) Are they replacable of just chunk them away and buy new ones. They can be expensive!

In inspecting the shrouds, I have located the ones that attach to the chain plates, however there is a set of shrouds above the spreaders that turn into a boom vang. Do these attach to the toe rail?? I cannot locate any point to attach them. I have looked at all my pictures but failed to record the location.

Main Boom: I found 3 lines on the boom. One turns into wire and adjusts the foot of the mainsail. One has an eye and I assume is for the topping lift. There is a 3rd line that ends in a knot and does not look like it goes to anything. Any ideas??

Thanks for your help.

Wow! lots of ground covered. You had a great day! In the olden days ther were Cruising Design (CD) roller furlers. I haven't, but an internet search or an e-bay search may find you drawings or parts.

My personal druthers is replace the blocks with broken sheeves. If the sheevs are worn, the "cheeks" ar probably stressed also. Seeing a line fly thru the air toward your throat when a block explodes is not fun.

My 37c is sloop rigged, but I have some pieces for the cutter rig. Some of those are "Running Backstays " they attach to the mast at the Staysail stay level and on my boat have shackles on the toe rail. They can be eased and move back if the mast deforms due to staysail loading.

My guess is the third line is for reefing the main. If you run it Up thru the mansail reef clew, and back down to the boom you can reef the forward and aft parts of the main from the mast.

That is a really old CDI furler: http://www.sailcdi.com/ . Worth a call to see if parts are available. Most of the blocks could be repaired with new sheaves. But it requires drilling out the rivet heads and either reriveting or bolting. E-Bay is a good place to look.

Bill is correct, the "extra" wires are running backstays. I wonder if you have the hardware to connect them to the toerail. They attach with a small 4:1 block assy with a block at the bottom with a cam cleat and a snap shackle.

The original Kenyon boom had two reefing lines and the outhaul as internal lines. The topping lift attached with a pin through a bracket at the back. There should be two cam cleats at the gooseneck end, one for each reefing line.

Thank you for your insight. I should have waited till I got home and researched the furler info. Yes there is a cruising desing furler company (CDI) and it looks like I am in luck.
Regarding the running backstay, it makes sense. They attach at the location were the staysail shrout attaches. I will research later were on the toerail to attach them.
As for the extra boom line, the reefing line make very good sense. Althou it terminated as a knot, I could attach a different set up to quickly attach the 1st reef of the main sail
Thanks a lot. You hit every spot, I may call on you again with more questions in the future.
Cheers

Regarding the blocks. I don't know about your area, but in SF Bay this is the time of year for nautical swap meets, flea markets etc. I've picked up older, but good blocks for a song many times. Might be a solution for you. As Ed Schenck has posted, it is possible to repair old blocks with new sheeves, providing other parts of the blocks are OK. Repair can be time consuming. The cheeks of blocks are often anodized aluminum and the main stress bearing parts are SS. Over time, the SS causes galvanic corrosion to the aluminum. This can't be repaired. If flea markets aren't in your area, consider new Garhaurer blocks. Garhaurer is good quality and are priced very reasonably. Available in the "Store" section of this website
