I finally posted my A/B installation pictures in the Photo Forum. You might remember that I dragged my feet on this project because I have a nice dorm fridge mounted under the stove. It is 110v but only draws 9 amps about 30 minutes an hour through the inverter. Still I wanted a 12V system in the icebox. The new system also runs about half time but only draws five to six amps. So even with poor insulation three amp/hours is not too bad.

Nice job Ed!

Looks like a quality job, dont know if you looked at mine but the unit mounts down in the hole which takes up the best most usable part of the box. and i dont have the air return, its 284 on my list! mine does work a bit harder breathing hot air! but its quiet! Be nice to have a cold drink on the trip!

Ed S, did you have ice box access

through the cockpit locker before the refer unit was mounted?

Yes to Scott.

Originally the door to the beer shelf was operational from the locker. I used that access to insulate the back section(inside/top). Then I insulated that locker door and covered the whole thing with 1/4" plywood. The plywood is screwed to that door. If I take the plywood out the door comes with it.

Nice pictures!

Ed, Nice pictures of the refer installation. Thanks again for having me over to check it out in person. It was very interesting seeing another 37c for the first time. You do nice clean work on your upgrades. How's the deck painting coming? Morrie

Morrie you left us hanging

on your holding tank project. Did you buy a "how to install holding tank" DVD so you could watch on your new player in the vee berth while you contemplated the next step?

Scott - abandoned holding tank project

I decided to put a LectraSan under the shower seat. My shower has already been modified so that the seat is removable and I think the LectraSan I found on Ebay will fit down there nicely. That will leave me all that under-the-V-berth space for storing Stuff. I'm trying to get ready for long range cruising by maximizing strorage space where ever possible. The LectraSan is a great space saver.

You bought it on eBay?? Uh-oh...

Quite often, Lectra/Sans offered for sale on eBay have obsolete controllers or have been sitting on the shelf for so long that all the rubber parts are shot...or worse, the unsuspecting seller tested to see it if it would run without any water in it and in so doing, damaged the electrode pack. Any of the above costs more, including the purchase price, to restore to good working order than a brand new one purchased at discount....Fore and Aft Marine has the best price I've seen...$699. They sell brand new ones on eBay...so if you bought one of those, disregard everything I've said so far. You got a good buy. But if you bought any other one, call Vic Willman at Raritan...800-352-5630 x 6...before you install it. You may get lucky...or you may decide to put it back up on eBay to become someone else's bad buying decision. Meanwhile, if anyone else is considering bidding on a Lectra/San--or any other marine sanitation equipment--on eBay, I'll be glad to tell you whether it's a good buy or not--and why--if you'll email the link to the listing to me.

Peggy - thanks

Thanks for the advice. I was aware I could be getting a bad unit at $150, so I purchase the paypal money back guarantee for a couple of dollars extra. Then, I had it shipped directly to Holt Marine Systems in Maryland. They specialize in repairing and rebuilding Lectrasans. All the gaskets were good and it worked fine. Even though the electrodes looked like they would last a few more years, I went ahead and had new ones installed for about $200, just to be on the safe side. So, I have an essentially new unit for a total of just over $350. I've spent thousands of dollars on "sailboat-stuff" on Ebay over the last year or so and I'm very careful about anything purchased there. The worst thing that's happened to me is I've had a few things take a long time to get shipped when I wanted them right away. I've heard some real horror stories though.

Morrie, can you keep us (me) posted

on the Lectra San project, as that would be my preferred remedy/location when my '85 tank gives out.

Whew! :) About Holt Marine...

They sound like a contact I can use. I could get their contact info from Raritan, but since I'm just as lazy as everyone else here :), how 'bout posting it? I'm prob'ly not the only one here who can use it. It sounds like you did ok...however, my advice wasn't only for you, but for anyone considering bidding on sanitation equipment on eBay...email the listing to me, 'cuz I know what to look for. But about PayPal's money back guarantee for a couple of $$ more...I can't find any reference to it on the PayPal site...only to their automatic $500 "buyer protection" coverage--which I found out the hard way isn't worth a damn A couple of years ago I paid over $200 for a silver tray the seller had represented as sterling, but turned out to be cheap silver plate worth about $20. The seller refused to take it back, and Paypal refused to honor their "buyer protection" coverage, claiming mine was a "quality or condition" dispute, not covered. That was the last time I've ever paid for anything through eBay with cash, and I keep a -0- balance in my Paypal account. I only use a credit card...'cuz Citibank would have covered it. So while you did ok, when it comes to buying on eBay AND paying with Paypal, "caveat emptor" definitely rules!
