Just looking for a little direction. Has anyone replaced the turning blocks for the head sail sheets on a Cherubini 37? Looking for a good sourcing option. Most likely online. Hoping to replace just the inner wheel. Picture attached...

Welcome to the forum!!

Look to see if there is s manufacturer name and size on it. Then go online and find that one or one that closely matches and make sure it will carry the sheet diameter that will go through it. Lots of manufacturers and prices like Lewmar. Schaefer. Harken, etc. Chances you will have to replace the entire block but you might get lucky and be able to replace only the wheel.

Thanks "sail sfbay". Totally agree with that process. Small wrinkle just now as I'm in Alaska and the boat is in Washington. I was just hoping someone had the same setup and had some experience with replacing.

These guys used to do custom sheaves Mast + Boom Sheaves (dreamgreen.org)
I don't know if they are still doing that.. If you took the sheave itself to a machine shop, they could make a couple from a plastic of your choice, delrin, nylon, etc. Those blocks look a lot like the turning blocks on the H-34's; the pin can be removed from the underside of the body. I think Allan may have replaced his and posted the process.. a forum search would pick that up, I think.

This may help you. The Lewmar Cheek Blocks were totally rebuildable. But it helps to be there in person and have access to some tools.

Thank you everyone for the information. Just purchased this vessel and will be making several trips down to Washington this winter to get her ready for the trip up to Seward, Alaska. Definitely realize being there, is the best option, just trying to get myself as prepared as possible for each visit so I can make the best use of the time.

-knappytime,

If you can find some decently priced snatch blocks, you could shackle one on each side on your extruded toe rail. I did that for a while until after I fixed my cheek blocks. They also worked as turning blocks for my cruising spinnaker.

Good luck with the move. I was there a long time ago on a much much larger boat. Didn't have to worry about lines or sails. Only had to remember to eat every two hours whether I needed it or not. -Allan

Been up here for over 50 years next year. Never tried one of those big fancy ships with no sails and endless buffet lines (In Alaska that is...) The boat is currently rigged with snatch blocks on the toe rail, but not a permanent solution for me. :) Thanks for the suggestion though. Keep them coming, never too old to learn something new. -Kemp

Hello,

I just replaced my turning blocks with new, ball bearing blocks. The holes exactly matched the old blocks. Block were mounted with threaded Rivets in the fiberglass.

The blocks I replaced had UV damaged shives that barely worked. The replacement procedure was 2 minutes a block with an impact screw driver and some lock tight.

If anyone is interested, I'll look up the source of the new blocks. As of now, I have a season on the new blocks with no issues.

Michael,
I would be very interested in the source for your new blocks.

My search of emails didn't work for this. I'll be at the boat this weekend and send pics. The manufacturer is on the turning blocks.

I found the actual turning block from a UK company at a very high price. As I said, the blocks I found were better, in that they had ball bearings, and the screw/bolts fit to the old perfectly.

Thanks Michael, I'll look forward to the images.

Dave, your byline says "Catalina 22 Seattle" but you're on the east coast? I'll see what Michael comes up with and when I'm in Bellingham at the boat, the end of this month I may reach out.

Hello,

Figured out the direct replacement for the turning blocks. I'm just finishing a deck Awlgrip and have the turning blocks off the deck. A pic is attached. These were exact replacements for the original UV damaged turning blocks I had. 5 minutes with an impact driver to remove the old, and replace with these is all it took.

I ordered these as
from Garhauer's web site after way too much time researching this !! Garhauer was very helpful in responding and providing the screw dimensions in the 2nd pic attached.

After a season of use, these turn much better than the original turning blocks, especially considering the shives on the original were pretty beat up from decades of UV.

Most of the original blocks on the Hunter 37 Cutter were by Merriman (long out of production today). On my boat I replaced almost all the original sheaves with various stock size sheaves from Schaefer. Sometimes the diameters were slightly different but usually the axle size was the same. Most of the 'axles' were 1/4" stainless steel 'rivets'. I ground the head off one side and drove the axle out the other side with a pin punch. I replaced the sheave and made a new axle out of a piece of 1/4" stainless round stock, cut to size and peened over with a ball peen hammer. Worked for me. And lasted as long as the boat did.

Thanks Michael, for taking the time to provide this information. You weren't kidding when you mentioned making an investment... Certainly looks sturdy and I like the idea of ball bearings. Headed down to the boat weekend after next so I'll have a chance to really look this issue over.

Hello,

Interesting you are new to the Cherubini. John Cherubini worked near where I am. His sons, nephews and other family pop up around the Riverton, NJ area making boats.

I've done too much research into figuring out upgrades to the 37 C. Some quick "Finds" that may be helpful.

Small portlights from AMarine are $30 on Amazon, drain much better than the originals. I've read that painting them is a good idea as the plastic is supposed to not be quite as good as the original portlights. The originals are available for around $160. I see in the pic of your boat a former owner redid the portlights ? Portlights really need to be mounted properly to avoid leaking.

Post questions here if you are considering upgrades.
