I just installed an Autohelm ST4000+ on my H37C and got a compas deviation of 25 deg. The compass is mounted in the cabin under the floor even with the front of the galley sink. Where has anyone had experience with a better location. Jerry S/V Makai

under the head sink

I mounted mine on the forward side of the bulkhead under the sink in the head, (port side), inside the cabinet. (Left side if you're looking into the cabinet) This puts it near the center of the boat, and away from most metal items. I did have to have my wife store here clothes iron somehwere else, but otherwise it's worked well. If your 25 degrees is consistant on all heading you may just need to do some adjustments. I'm not sure what would be in the area you have it mounted in now that would cause yor problems.

Under the Nav Table

My flux gate is mounted under the 37c's nav table, on the bulkhead that the table hangs off of, as much toward centerline as possible. It's out of the way and works very well, though I am careful not to put anything large and metallic (or magnetic) in the nav table.

I have ours under the floor board, center line in the Salon, near the galley cabinet....Seems to work fine there.... How do you like the 4000+ ? Am thinking of upgrading our 4000 to it... Good luck with the compass swing...

Deviation adjustment

The Autohelm/Raytheon 4000+ can be adjusted to align the compass in the unit to the one on the boat. Do not expect them to both read the same at all times. Any two compasses are subject to thier own deviation. Read your manual and perform the setup and adjustments as described. Although the specifications for the 4000+ are a little light for the 37C it has performed flawlessly for me for 5 years. Good luck

st 4000 plus compass

I started with mine high on the right wall of the companionway around the corner from the head door on my 33....got 15 degrees....then I tried it high on the wall just above the nav station a few inches below the coachroof........this is on the inside of the port wall just about 18 or 20 inches ahead of the bulkhead, got a 2 degree dev. not bad

I installed a st5000 in my 37cutter and mounted the compas under the sink on the bulkhead near the center line. I don't remenber the deviation but the normal set up adjusted it fine and Ive had two years of use and it functions great.
