I have started noticing a leak (when raining) coming out from the overhead through the holes for the florenscent light above the stove. Has anyone else experienced this? What was the source of the leak?

wet core

Something on the deck is letting water into the cored area between the deck and liner. you may have to work slowly with a hose untill you find out were its coming in. If it only leaks after a lot of rain probably the water is leaking in until it reaches a level that it leaks out again at the light. you will need to look at the areas that are lower than the light to figure out where the water is accumulating. I had to drill some small holes in the liner to find leaks up forward but the water was appearing about 5 feet from the leaks. so you will have to work at it to find it. if you have small holes drilled over the stove out near the cabinets you may find it alot quicker. the water will come out the low spot first. good luck. Most likely.

Water can travel long distances in the liner. But the most likely close locations to that light are the portlights. Many of us who have removed those portlights found the coring to be completely rotted away in the cabin sides. The water gets behind the frame, soaks through the coring as Ed Allen mentioned, and finds the path of least resistance. A test on one at a time with a hose is in order.

Leaks?

On my H37C I had water coming out of the light in the aft berth. I finally traced it to screws on the foward hatch that were loose and letting water past. My suggestion is to start taking apart the nearest port, hatch, etc until you find it

Hand Rails?

Mark: Leaks are very seldom easy to find. I don't know where your light is located but if it is in the coach roof you may want to remove the hand rails. You can then drill out the holes and refill with epoxy. Then you can redrill and bed the hand rails again.

Deck Drains

I have had both of the amidship deck drains leak water into the core. Pull them and check for cracks.

If you ever find the source...

... please let me know. I've had the same nuisance problem on my 37c for years, and I've yet to track down the source.

My leakds

Those lenses love to collect water...probably because they are just the right height for the following 3 leaks I discovered: 1. portlight coamings, 2. deck drains that exist through the hull, 3. stanchion mounts. Old boats are better than picture puzzles, yes?

Cabin leaks and wet core

Leaks and wet cores are probaly the most common problem on boats of our vintage, and not only Hunters, just take a look at the web sites for owners of other brands. Posts have the same theme, only the names are changed. When you consider that most fittings were just wood screwed into the plywood core and that the caulking or bedding material is close to or over 20 years old then leaks are bound to happen. By the time the leaks are noticed on the inside the core is already wet, and as a past owner of several wooden boats the quickest way I know of to get wood to rot is to encase it in fiberglass and keep it wet. Are the handrails loose? When was the last time the deck mounted blocks by the mast were checked? Is the caulking around the ports dried out from UV? A good place for leaks to start on the 37C is the staysail track, and not just the track but also the wood trim under the track. Hatch screws loose? Even the teak trim strip over the ports can let the water in, a drop at a time maybe but it adds up. The best fix is to pull everything off, check for wet core around the screw holes, dry it out, epoxy the core edges and remount the hardware with a good bedding compound. It is a big job but do it and enjoy a dry boat, or just chase down leaks for as long as you own her.
