I have talked myself into needing an autopilot for my 1980 H37C. It has a Yacht Systems wheel. Has anyone installed a Autohelm ST4000 wheel pilot or Navico Wheel Autopilot 300SX on a YS wheel? Please give me advise or experience with either unit. Jerry S/V Makai

Autohelm auto pilot installation

I installed Autohelm 4000 on a H34 in March, with a Merriman wheel.. From what I learned, I wouldn't think that the wheel matters as there were spare parts for any number of spokes, and many adjustments for mounting motor. The only hassle with the Autohelm was to locate the control head. I didn't have a spare instrument hole on the pedestal, so had to mount nearby on cockpit wall. Snaked wiring rather easily through the pedestal. I believe that on the Navico, the control unit is built into the mechanism. My only concern then would be reaching between the wheel spokes or around the wheel to enter a command. But I never looked closely into the Navico. Was surprised at the range of prices between West, Defender and Boat US. Good luck. Jim

Older 4000

I have the older 4000 and it has worked flawlessly even in 40 knt winds and 12 foot waves. The controll head is on the starboard cockpit wall.

Just Installed AH4000

Just finished installing with no problems - except wiring in my wind instrumnets to the AH4000 (the "+" in the back accepts the NEMA input from wind instruments, the "-" goes to ground - there are no instructioons telling you this) Mounted the readout on starboard side just above the pump. Through experiment, sensor is in cabin just below the pedestal as close to the floor as possible - got 9 degree deviation. Works great
