Has anyone pulled the portlights on a Hunter Cutter (mine is a '79)? The originals are still in place, cracked and leaking in a few places. Besides, the replacements I have found are powder-coated aluminum frames with lexan. Should be nearly indestructible. My chief fear is that I have to deal with 5700, or something similar. Debra

Why not just replace?

Debra: Why not just replace the existing ports with the same thing. After all they have lasted 20+ years. Do not think that powder coated ones are going to last any longer and still look good. They can be had for about $40 ea and are direct replacements (at Thrifty Mariner. Replacements are going to cost $200 or more for each port. Someone has done this recently and it was not an easy job. Don't think that they used 5200 and you should not use it for this application. Either 4200 or Life Caulk are better options. Also think that Sika and GE make some excellent alternative caulks.

H37C portlights.

To remove my 1979 Gray portlights I have to break the outside frame into pieces. After removing the screws there is so much old caulk still holding on that I use a small bar, the kind carpenters use for nail removal. The frame comes off in little pieces. Then you have to dig out as much caulk from between the spigot and cabin plywood as possible. With the screws out from the inside you will eventually be able to push the port out of the hole, from the outside to the inside. I hope you won't find too much wet and/or rotten plywood. The front four ports(5x12) are in 1" thickness. The other six(7x15) are in a thicker cabin, about 1.5". So you need different spigot lengths. I am installing NFM bronze. They use real safety glass instead of Lexan. It's a very tough and time-consuming job. Did you get my note about engine access from the q-berth? Ed(h37skipper@aol.com) s/v Ladylove

PS:

Debra: There is an article in the Hunter Knot Line magazine (summer 2001 edition). They now recommend Dow Corning 795 sealant.
