I'm looking to move way up in boat size. I currently have an H240. I have been researching the Hunter 37 along with some other like the Catalina 36. I have not sailed on a Hunter 37 yet, but have been impressed with what I have read on upwind performance. I will be on the Chesapeake Bay, and the 4'9" draft would be much more welcom that the deep draft version. How much performance loss is there in the shallower draft? Does the shallow draft still point high?

Hunter 37 performance

I have a 1987 Legend 37 with a deep keel. This summer I beat a Legend wing keel on a distance race across Lake Michigan, along with a lot of other boats. Conditions were a beam reach and we were able to fly a chute all the way - in 16 knots of apparent wind. The other legend 37 could not fly her chute. Also I have won plenty of races - the other weekend we beat a Schock 35 on all three windward leward races. (see pictures on the owner pictures tab ) I will take the deep keel any day for performance. Tim Gabrielse Blaze REsults of Queens cup = see www.ssyc.org

Thanks for your response. I agree the deep version will have better performance. But since I will be sailing on the Chesapeake Bay the shallower draft would open up more anchorages. I just wondering how much of a performance loss the keel makes. Any of you H37 owners out there with the shallow draft version I would lover to here from you.

You Might Be Frustrated

I agree with Tim. I have the wing keel version of the Legend 37 and last weekend watched a 375 go by me on a beam reach with an asymmetrical chute go by me like I had grabbed a crab pot!!! (I had a poled symmetrical kite) Good news is that on the down wind leg I was ahead at the turn by more than 7 minutes. Bad news is that I lost the race by 10 seconds in the last 5 miles. As for the boat in a cruising situation, I couldn't be happier. She is a lovely sail, good in most conditions (except very light winds which are common in mid-to-late summer). And (sorry for you who don't live here) there is no better sailing than on the Chesapeake!!! Good Luck, Rick Eagle II
