Folks,
The icebox on my 1980 H36 seems useless and is taking valuable space. Has anyone on this forum found a good use for this icebox? It is too deep for any kind of storage and I need a ladder to get to the bottom of the icebox.

any ideas appreciated.

Same as H37C? I refrigerated mine. You can see that under H37C in "Hunter Owner Modifications". I remember that another H37C owner, Rainbow Chaser, completely rebuilt the galley to change the size, shape, and location of the icebox. Do not recall what any H36 owners might have done. Lots of Gene's projects might be helpful for H36 owners: http://austinsailor.net/upgrades.html . His entire website is a hoot what a project guy: http://austinsailor.net/.

Nope. But its been a good place to keep my inventory of paper plates, cups and rolls of paper towels. And I do like the cool teak cover. I've got long arms so can reach the bottom (almost) just fine.

Seriously I also have often contemplated about the space.

- See if I can resurect the Allen Barber Cold machine, patch up the insulation and use the space as intended;

- Or convert the area to a smooth counter top and down below remove the inner refrigerator liner and then add cabinet doors and shelves for storage. For this option, a small refrigerator would go where the stove/oven originally was. Or since I mostly day sail or do just short trips of several nights, a cooler with lots of ice also works real well.

It is a good place to place 40 lbs of ice and two cases of beer for a weekend trip. The ones on top should not be hard to fetch.

We had a '85 H'31 with a very deep icebox. The original box had a shelf in it. I added another shelf the decrease the depth. When we would go for an extended trip we would place ice in the bottom (it had a refrigeration unit on it) section and add additional supplies (more beer & wine) below the shelf. The stuff that we used immediately was on top.
