I am wondering if the speed transducer on my 2002 h356 will have the little flap in the thru hull fitting to limit water intrusion when i replace the blank with the actual unit?

The actual transducer was removed before the boat was hauled dor the survey and it was not replaced afterwards.

Assume that it doesn't.... have the replacement at hand ready to insert. Might get a half gallon of water or so... no big deal.. boat isn't gonna sink.

Different model here, but ours has no flap. So, when I pull the transducer out and replace it with the plug, some water does come in. Same thing happens when I swap the plug with the transducer. Not a lot of water, but some. Just be prepared. Towels around your work area will help gather most of the water that comes in.

I also apply some non-petroleum grease to the transducer "O" rings before placing. Helps it slide in nicely and also makes for a better seal.

If the boat has been resting for a period of time, the wheel rotation might become stubborn from marine growth. What seems to help, rather than pull the transducer out, I will loosen and wiggle it some to break up any growth the might interfere with its rotation. Even boat motion through the water will free it.

It depends - if you have the original instruments - usually Raymarine ST 60s, the speed transducer thru hull does have a flap - but they get stiff from age so you will get some water. As Terry said, have some towels, and a second set of hands ready to stick in the transducer when you pull the plug helps

Thx Terry. Good info. I am a little nervous about this procedure. I am going to have help there with me. But neither of us have done it before.

It's more annoying that actually dangerous.... smearing some Desitin (diaper rash ointment) on the impeller can slow down marine growth... notice I said "slow down" not "stop". That's essentially why the units are removable... cause they get cruddy.

The first time you do it you are sure before you remove it that you’ll sink your boat. You won’t. If the real transducer won’t go in, it’s because it’s not aligned properly. Look for the slot before you start removing the plug one and align the real one like the plug one comes out. Remember - you can always put the plug back in! You will be surprised how little actual water comes in. Looks far worse than it really is.
