I need to go up the mast of my H35 Legend to replace the sheaves for the topping lift and main halyard.

Does anyone have a picture of what the masthead looks like, so I'm prepared for it?

Isomat mast?

Maybe you have already read the text on the subject but there is a lot written if you use "Search" with "mast" and "35.5". There are more than one thousand words there so at least one "picture". One sample:

Then you can check out the Rig-Rite site where the parts can be ordered.

My mast is down now. I could take a picture if you like. If you have no other things attached to your masthead (VHF, instruments, etc), then there is a cap held on with one screw on the front of the mast. When you remove the cap, the axel will lift out and the sheaves can be slid off, new ones slid on, and it all dropped back in place. You have to relieve tension on your halyards, etc. That leads to the issue of how to support yourself once your up. Be safe!

With instruments on you masthead, then you may have to remove other things first to get it appart. My windex and anchor light and raymarine instruments are attached to the removable plate on my mast. In general it is simple to get apart.

Sheaves and lines

Before you go replacing sheaves you might consider the size of line you are using through it. If your problem is drag in the system AND you are using a larger than designed for line then the line will rub badly as it goes through the masthead.
I had the same problem on my 37.5 Legend when using a 1/2" line. after going up the mast and finding the sheaves turning freely I replaced the 1/2" lines only to have them rub. I changed to 7/16" line and the lines now run nicely.

I had the same problem Bill did...

on my H34. I quickly discovered that a 1/2" halyard does not want to run free in the masthead sheaves. Replaced it again with 7/16" and now the main drops as soon as it is released. Also, old braided line tends to get "fuzzy", adding to its thickness which may be a contributor to the problem.

Dan and Bill are correct.

Oversize line can be a problem. i went a step further and reduced my halyard size down to 3/8" spectra, makes a helluva difference.

Here's a pic of my masthead FWIW
