H34 - Have you used the emergency steering handle?

Have any of you tried steering with the tiller attachment, if so, how hard was it to steer compare to the wheel? (please indicate if the cables were still attached to the quadrant as this would add a fair amount of friction if left on)

Asking because I consider switching to tiller steering (personnal preference) and those rudder don't have much compensation (area in front of pivot axis) so it might be a bit stiff...

Once I had to use the emergency tiller. A clamp holding the steering cables came loose and so the wheel was useless. It happened when I was in a canal with a tug and tow very close. It was a fire drill to be sure!

It was my mistake to have never fitted the tiller and so I had to learn in the moment.

Yes it was harder to steer but the real issue was the alignment and insertion of the tiller into the top of the rudder post. I had expected that the tiller handle would align along the center-line of the boat, but it actually aligns port to starboard. Now I know.

I've tested mine a few times in fair conditions (1983 H34). No issues. Cables were attatched.

Hello,
I had this experience on the H33 due to a small screw that is stuck under the steering wheel (Law Marfy - at night and in rough seas).
After a bit of uncertainty, we understand the movement and becomes like a tiller.
Now that I know it works I do not care if it happens again.
My advice to you is that you can not wait to try it as an exercise for the emergency.
