I was wondering about the little aquarium/terrarium on the cabin top of my H34. I assume it was designed for winch handle storage, but it has a plexiglass top with a thumbhole, so air, water, light, spores and small fish can get in. There is a small drainage hole in the corner of the box and I was wondering if anyone knows where this drains. Mine must be blocked, because it fills up with water when it rains and doesn't drain.

drains

Ours drains to the area under the spray hood, work a length of wire into the existing holes to be sure they are clean. several times a season we spray a hose under there to get the scum out, spray where the lines enter and exit, you will see a lot of gunk come out!(put in the boards and close the hatch!)Good luck.

Winch handle box? I thought it was to grow algae

It's there to hold a winch handle, eh? I always thought its only value was to grow algae. Always wondered what that thing was for.

Can't be a winch handle box

Are you sure that box is for a winch handle? There is no winch in that area. I studied the box and came to the conclusion that it was to store the strips of cloth that are used to tie down the main before putting on the main cover. If anyone has a better idea, what is it?

the box

Not sure what other sailors are using this "box" for, but I figured out (after two years of owning the boat) that it works nicely for the ties I use on the main. While I never leave anything in there after a sail, I have found that it is a convenient place to pick up the ties when packing the main, and occasionally when having to reef. Frankly, it seems like one of those, "let's use this space for something" ideas boat designers come up with. Evan
