I am replacing the existing rode (35' of 3/8" chain & 90' of rope) on my 1986 H34 with a new Plath manual windlass and new chain/rope to match. I am also lengthening the rope portion. What would be your recommendation on chain size/type, length of chain and rope? I normally anchor in depths of 20-30 feet, depending on tide heights.

The chain size is dictated by your windlass selection. Have you considered an electric windlass?
I woul go with 75' of chain and 200' of line prpperly sized for your vessel.

Thanks, Steve. I have been going around in circles as to whether to install a manual or electric windlass. I have been told that electric ones are MUCH more expensive to install, when you consider all the costs associated with it - windlass, cabling, switches, contactor, etc.

Hi Marc, I have installed a Lewmar electric windlass on my 34. Runs 5/16" Grade 4 chain. 75' of chain spliced to 150' of 5/8" 3-strands nylon rode. Your main issue on our 34s will be depth of anchor well to allow for chain and rode to drop in. I made mine deeper to accomodate new setting. Works extremely well with a hand-held control at the bow and remote control at the wheel. If you decide to go that route, let me know and I'll post pictures. I frequently anchor in 20 to 25 feet and the set-up has worked extremely well for me.

Great Info, Claude, yes I'd be very interested in seeing your photos. Can you remember what was the entire cost of the project?

Marc it has been 6 years but I think I probably spent around $1500. That was for material alone (including the windlass) since I did all the work myself with the help of my brother-in-law for the fiberglassing and a good friend who let me use his machine shop for the work needed on support metal parts.

Wow, nice pdf presentation!

Do you have any others projects covered this way?
Thanks Guillaume,
Don't want to hi-jack this thread so I'll simply tell you that having owned the boat for 14 years, sailing her close to 20,000 miles, I probably have been over all of the areas of concern. Many have been posted here over the years. I can PM you the info I have if you let me know what you're looking for.

Claude,
Do you have any pictures of what you did to yourchain locker?
I have been looking at a lot of fore decks to see if there is anything out there that may be of use. I even contacted Hunter to see which unit they recomended for this boat, did not get a reply.
So any pictures would be appreciated.

I don't see any attachments to Claude's post but I do see the photos that have been attached to other threads. Do I need to change something to view them?
