When the geniuses at my marina moved my boat to its winter home, for some reason they moved the main halyard and somehow wrapped the main halyard and flag halyard together. The result is that the flag halyard has cut the main halyard just about in half. The main halyard is led aft to the cockpit. I have a couple of questions: 1. Any idea how long the halyard is, especially if led aft? 2. Current halyard is 1/2", but it seems like overkill (just weekend cruising and daysailing, no racing). Is 3/8 or 7/16 better (assuming it will work in the line clutch)? 3. Can anyone recommend a brand? I'm thinking of New England Ropes Sta-SetX, currently on sale at WM. As always, thanks for the help. Sta-set is easier on the hands

Tom: I have a Sta-set X main halyard on my H'31. This is a very stiff line. All of the others are regular Sta-set and a much easier to handle. Typically a smaller line is going to cause less friction on the sheaves and sheet stoppers, so if they will work you should be fine with 7/16".

Tom, Call Hunter for the exact measurement. i can not say enough great things about the customer support staff those guys provide. Return all phone calls same day, have all the specs at their finger tips, and you just get the feeling they really want to help you. You can tell they want you in a Hunter the rest of your life!!! Hope you have a great season!!! Daddy's Dream

Interesting and timely question...

We're a couple days (maybe the end of the week) away from point-and-click running rigging in the chandlery. I've been working all week with formulas for sheets and halyards. Interestingly, the load on the main halyard is somewhat hard to grasp. The most common formula is 80% of the sheet load... but calculating the load on the mainsheet is over and above what can be done on a web site. The other forumula I've seen is from Bryan Toss: LOA x (LOA-10). This would put your halyard load at 759 lbs which can easily be handled by a decent 3/16" rope. Seems low, doesn't it?

See this one.

I think NE Ropes recommends 'X'. The Related Link is what I bought for my H37C. And I think the 115' is right for your boat, twice the length of mast above the step plus cabin top. Phil is right, even 7/16" is overkill for our boats. But you have the clutch issue and I believe if 1/2" works then 7/16" will be fine. If Phil gets his chandlery updated I would buy it from HOW. :)

H-33.5 Main Halyard Length

Tom, In Spring of 2002 I replaced my main halyard on our 1990 H-33.5 due to age. Mine also goes back to the cockpit. The new one was Sta-Set-X 7/16" and 114' long. I connected the 'butt' end of the new one to the shackle end of the old (without the shackle) and use the old to pull the new one thru. Size and length are adequate & satisfactory. I had it madeup at New England Yacht Rigging in East Greenwich, RI. They spliced the pld shackle into the new halyard and a 'Flemish Eye' into the butt end also. $141.58 complete Dick Carey S/V Puffin 1990 H-33.5

Halyard Lengths

105 foot is the actual length I used to bring both halyards back to the cockpit. I ordered to achieve 110 ft after splicing. I let Rigging Only do the splice on the Sta-Set X for the main. I did the others on standard Sta-Set using Brion Toss's instruction tape and only blew it a couple of times. I made all my halyards 7/16" if for no other reason than comfort of handling. In reality the Sta Set X is pretty much overkill. It's stiff and kind of hard to handle, doesn't even like to take a figure eight knot.

Sta-set X Is A Pain

I re-rigged the main with X and it is a true pain. It jams all the time, the main hangs up on drop, and it is a pain to coil. IF I can get a line with low stretch that is a bit more like regular Sta-set, I'll replace it in a flash. Rick D.

X is a pain

Our H33 has 7/16" sta set for the main but I didn't write down the length. Our S2 has both sta set for the jib and sta setX for the main. The X is a true pain in the arse, difficult to handle, gets hung up all over the deck, yada, yada, yada. I have no doubt it won't break but I just might cut it far before it's natural life is over. We own many boats and for the last several years have replaced what ever lines with sta set, just an easier line to handle, more cost effective and has proven to be quite reliable after several thousand miles of coastal sailing and even some light beer can racing.

Thanks for the input

I appreciate all the insights. Sounds like 115 feet of 7/16 Sta-Set (NOT X!)is going to work. Phil, let me know when you're ready for the order! Tom
