Reading the recent posts about replacing the head in a 33 made me wonder where to put the holding tank. Right now, we're still using a reciculating head. I've thought about putting it under the floor of the starboard cockpit locker, but that would result in a very long vent hose and I think Peggy recommends the vent hose be kept as short as possible. Where have all of you located the holding tanks in a 33?

H33 holding tank location

Tom, I relocated the holding tank to a location high up next to the underside of the deck aft of the cockpit locker. Below is a photo forum link of the installation which has been quite satisfactory. The valving gives quite a bit of flexibility, (even lets you pump into the bottom of the tank to clear a blockage) and the high location allows for quick gravity draining. The stock tank that will fit is 13 gallons from West Marine. The tank essentially takes no storage from the cockpit locker

Excellent job Terry!

I replaced the original bladder on my H33 with the same tank, but didn't have the imagination that Terry has. My tank sits on the false wooden floor in that cockpit locker, taking up valuable room if you need to get down into the locker to service the stuffing box or transmission. It is held in place with straps and buckels in case I need to remove it. It is difficult to get the hoses off after a season. They seem to stick, requiring a little trimming with a knife. The question about venting. My original installation with the bladder had a vent on the starboard side directly behind the tank. In other words, a short run. I disconnected my Y valve and overboard discharge since they are not leagal on Lke Ontario. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Holding Tank in sail locker

Tom, on my 1981 33 I've got a Vetus soft tank (bladder)mounted against the hull. When you open the sail locker, the hoses come through that forward bulkhead (from the head)and then up to the right to the top of the tank. That puts the vent from the bladder about 18" below the deck. That gives me a 6" hose run to the hull vent below the toe-rail.

Holding Tank replacement

I replaced the blatter type holding tank on July, 2001 with a 15 gallon white nylon holding tank from BoatUS. I also discarded the double "Y" valve overboard flush system, including the Gusher Pump. This is something I believe we won't be able to use in the near future anyhow. The new system works nicely. I cut the newly installed waste hose in carefully thought out locations and reconnected these with collars held in place by stainless bands. This allows the tank to be removed occasionally for working below the cockpit.

33 Holding tank

Tom, I just installed a 20 gallon holding tank from raritan in the starboard locker. It fits nicely and leaves room to access the hoses under the locker floor. I had the tank custom made with two outlets at the bottom, the linlet at the side near the top and the vent and cleanout on the top of the tank. I put a macerator pump between one of the outlets and the existing through-hull valve; attached the other outlet to the suction clean-out on the deck walkway, and used the existing vent hole through the hull. I installed a PHII toilet in the head, ran the hose to the inlet on the side at the top of the holding tank. Also, I linstalled an inline deodorant fixture to the fresh water supply line. It works wonderfully. If you like, I could forward the dimensions of the tank. 20 gallons is a very good size tank. joegooch@hotmail.com
