Hunter 33s have a relatively large interior, but I'm always amazed when I take down the saloon table just how much more roomy it then appears. I love it!

Since we mostly just have 2 aboard, I'm wondering about how to make it convert to make that space easily available.

One idea is to buy 2 extra aluminium leg supports (the round things that the table legs wedge into on the floor and under the table, then install then on the floor close to the seat along the port side, so I can just lift the table & legs and move it to the other position. Or I could put the two extra leg supports under the table itself. This would make the back settee unusable - but for two people, no problem.

Or I could cut the table and put a piano hinge along it so the extension inside the legs hinges down (actually would need two hinges so the down part wouldn't interfere with the cushions). But I don't know if I could do this and have it look good when in the up position.

Has anybody done anything like this? Would appreciate your thoughts.

Why not just take the table and supports out and kept it[them] out of the way in the V-berth? Have some TV tables available to use for snacking on.
Keep the big table for formal use.

I don't know how your tables are but on the H320 we have a table that slides up an down the mast support. It is meant to be lifted as a table or lowered to enlarge the sleeping bunk. What we did is take it all the way up the mast support and then drill a new hole for the retaining pin. This way the table does not interfere with the use of the settees and allows walking in the cabin. The boat can be sailed with the table up and after a while, you forget is there.

Wow, Benny,

that looks like a good approach for you. Unfortunately the H33 table is not secured to the compression post, so won't work for me.

In response to Paul, we do use a small coffee table for large hosting events (party, etc), but it's too much hassle for me to be moving the table in & out on a frequent basis, and anyway we sleep in the V berth, and the rear cabin is already full of temporary junk! (chairs, cushions, etc) Otherwise a good idea!

I'd suggest putting interlocking z-clips (leevalley.com) on the table and on a bulkhead. That way you could lift the table off the supports and hang it up. Those clips are VERY sturdy and would hold as long as the boat didn't heel over 45 degrees. Then you could put the legs somewhere and have the whole cabin open.

Bruce Bingham book, Sailor's Sketchbook has an idea for a table that hinges off the cabin seatback, but I don't know how well it would work in 33. I think the only other option would be one of those muliti-function folding tables you see on new Catalinas. Maybe a second smaller table with shorter legs?
