I have used the Cruisaire dropin for the last couple of seasons in the Florida panhandle. It does fine at night. In the blazing mid july mid afternoon, no way. Still its a far cry from no air and will work even in the daytime pretty well if the deck is shaded by an awning which really makes a huge difference.
Installed 12kbtu in v of v berth - filled in bottom of v with filter for intake air, put cool air out top of same part - no ducts, works well, but have to use a small fan in main cabin to move air to v berth, and can't shut v berth door when using air conditioner, no problem for me.
I installed the Mermaid 16,500 w/heat under the starboard side sette. All of the ducting is on that side, 3 discharge and the one intake. Keeps us liveaboards cool on the hottest days! The 5 year warranty is a plus too.
