H310 Shoal Keel Bent

I have a H310 with a winged shoal keel. The previous owner must have run it aground or bounced off a sand bar so one of the wings is bent up at the end and curled a little. I left it alone when I bought and moved the boat 18 years ago or other times when bottom jobs were done. However, my boat has been pulled out until the lake level recovers (if ever). So I have time to try and straighten it. My first thought is just leave it alone as it doesn't seem to hurt performance. But my ADHD goes nuts every time I go by the boat now. Thoughts? Try to fix it and best practice for that. Or just leave it alone?

A picture will give us a much better idea of the severity of the bend. Without a picture, haven't got a clue.

My OCD just kicked in .

I would want to fix that keel too. However, after 18 years of satisfying performance, it would be placed near the bottom of my to-do list. Meaning, I'd have to fix everything else around my boat, house, cars, job, gardens, and bees before I got to it.

As far as best practices...
The bottom aft corner of my sail is flying loose.

Thanks for all the replies .. I too have OCD CDO ADD ADHD and a couple other tendencies that probably don't have a name. I'll have a picture on Monday as am heading up there. I do have a long list of things to do but since it's out of the water and will be that way until we get alot of rain, I thought I would bump it up on the list provided I can do it without too much risk.

Welcome to the world of boats. If like me you’ll be experiencing a series of symptoms brought on by the boats eccentric behavior.

So here a couple of pics of the keel. Actually now that I really look at it, doesn't seem as bad as I thought. Probably just grind off that sharp bent up point. Curious what you guys think ..

Personally, I wouldn't bother with that at all... I did see one in the yard last year with one fin bent quite a bit more than yours. I don't think they fixed it, they were getting ready to launch.

Kent. What is your focuse here? Making sure everyting is factory perfect? Are you thinking you may be loosing 2-3 seconds racing? I suspect this will be one of those things that will bother you (play mind games on you).

"Damn, I lost that race. I know I coud beat that other boat is only I had fixed the keel."

It is not causing anything measurable to your sailling. If anything you may get a bit of extra lift when sailing on starboard tack.

I would not waste time on grinding. When it is in the water it is out of view. On that next rock you find it may be bent just enough that you slip right past it.

If you are still fixated on the keel, then pound the bent part straight. Grind the metal smooth. Add some epoxy filler. Smooth the surface. Primer and bottom paint. Good as nearly new. Time not sailling, Money for parts and of course the labor... Priceless.

IF it's lead you can pound it out. But I wouldn't. All that vibration might loosen something that matters - like the ice maker.

Leave it alone, and you have a good excuse if you get beat in a race

Or get some channel locks and a 5# sledge hammer and try to bend it back….
