H31 Transmission Cable Replacement

The cable from the steering pedestal to the transmission snapped and must be replaced. Also, while removing the old cable from the transmission, the fitting at the transmission connecting the cable to the lever sheared. I have the new cable, but need the fitting and can not find a replacement anywhere.

Any ideas where I can get one?

I'm having a lot of difficulty getting at the fittings inside the pedestal. It would be very easy if the steering pulley wasn't in the way, however I'd prefer not to remove it--I think I may cause more problems if I did. Does anyone have tips or a step by step guide as to how to get the cable into the pedestal and into the fitting (holder) located just below the pulley?

Thanks!

Dave

We had exactly same issue last summer.....fortunately, I had four good friends who helped me disassemble the pedestal...Now next need to know what brand of pedestal, etc. We had Edson, and I phoned Edson on a Thursday afternoon and they connected me with a standout fellow, a Mr. Reid Austin at Customer Service...He gave the four of us his toughts, realizing there could be two cable lenghts he sent me both...He was exactly right about everything....He said he had a family reunion coming up that weekend, but said to please call him if need be and he would be happy to help more....which we did....and everything got put back together and it works perfectly...We met Reid at the Newport Boat Show in September and we were happy to be able to thank him personally....later met the wife of the Edson CEO walking their puppy along Thames St...and told her the story of Reid Austin and our being out on the
prairie of Kansas and how Ried had helped us....She was very nice as well....Says a lot
about Customer Service at Edson.....but call him, maybe he can help you too....Patrick

The pedestal is most likely a Merriman Yacht Specialties. The company has been out of business for a while.. On this site in the boat info "Downloads" section, there is a file (Merriman Steering Parts) that has instructions and drawings of the assembly.. and notes on cable installation. Nope, it is not an easy job to feed the new one into the housing and under the clamp on the aft side of the tube. Be very careful with the plastic casting that holds the shift and throttle levers. it is no longer available and may be brittle where the cable jacket attaches to the underside. (if you are lucky, a previous owner may have replaced the plastic with an aluminum casting) .. Happy fishing !

Ok, if it is a Merriman Yacht Specialties then you can replace that broken plastic "slice" of the pedestal with that tab on it easily with an improved solid aluminum one from Joes Racing Products. I had the same thing happen to mine a few months ago. Ordered their improved part and the cable and everything fit perfectly.

The one I received was Very high quality, it mounted easily. The whole changeout project took me about 4 hours. This includes removing the original old plastic one and installing their very well made Aluminum one. Taking my time and being careful not to drop parts down inside. They are sold now with white powder coating as a part of production. he said they will sell in the $200.00 range.

This is a new part so make sure to ask for Robert when calling.
