H31 Toerail Rebedding?

84 H31 I think it's time, or past time, to rebed the toerail on the ol girl. I have a small leak running down the trough that drips at it's termination in both the lazarette (starboard) and the aft berth (port). There's a few small places where the caulk has lost contact with the toerail, hence, suspicion that this is the source. Who's done this? Should there be any surprises, or is it just a matter of removing all the nuts/bolts and prying it off? I have already fixed possible leaks on the mastbase, hatches, and fixed ports. Advice appreciated......Gary

torque the bolts

We have a 1987 Hunter 31 and we find it that a periodic tightening of the toe rail bolts keeps the leaks away.

Frank, can you give some details?

Do you actually tighten them with a torque wrench, or just tighten them? Any other details? Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8 '87 Hunter 31

3M 5200

My surveyor and Hunter said to use 5200 and hope you never have to remove it after that. That helped slow down but not eliminate the leaks

Gary, I agree with Frank. Tighten...

all of the toe rail bolts first before rebedding the rail, a big job. Hunter Marine puts alot of sealant in the joint during assembly. It is unlikely the leak source, but tighten everything up first. Also check all external attachment points in the leak area. Bolts, screws, push pit brackets, etc., also a source. No need to use a torque wrench. Just tight. Terry

Had the same problem about ten years ago on our 1986 31'. AS others stated, tighten all the bolts, stanchions, etc. The first time we started using a 1/2" drive. When we heard too much cracking it seemed to be too much torque. Dropped down to 3/8", snugged every bolt, and it has never leaked since. We do it every year as a standard commissioning task. Haven't had a leak since. I don't even want to think of re-bedding the joint in a nightmare. MAJOR, MAJOR job. Good luck.

Yippee, that's what I was hoping to hear.....

Cause I was not looking forward to getting the toerail off. Thanks much guys....Will cut out the bead of caulk on the inside of the toerail, clean and re-bead with DOW 795. Then tighten the bolts and hope for the best. I absolutely refuse to use 5200 on anything that there's a 1:1,000,000,000,000 chance I'll have to remove. My local hospital ER records will explain why. The PO must have received a case of the stuff for Christmas each year.
