Replacing the sink and rebuilding the sink drain system but have questions:

1. Should there be a trap?

2. Where is the drain routed? Is it a straight run aft, under the galley sole, under the dinette, under the head and into the holding tank?

I don't think you need a trap. I believe they are just for odors (sewer smell).
If I remember correctly the sink drained straight into the water right below the sink. You should see a seacock and thru-hull connected to the sink right below it.
Hope this helps

This is exactly how My H31 is plumbed. One in the head, and one in the galley.

The only reason for a trap is in HOME plumbing. It's there to keep sewer gases out of the house since the pipes are connected. Try "How things work" to see. Boats use straight out hoses to seacocks.

Thanks, guys. That is a major relief. Certainly simplifies everything. Just have to replace the hose and check the condition of the seacock.

Galley Sink

Our galley sink drains through a seacock below the waterline. I normally keep the seacock closed when we are away from the boat for any period of time. This seacock should open and close easily.

Our forward and aft cabin sinks also have seacocks, but drain above the waterline. I normally keep these closed while under sail because sea water will flow into and fill the sink when the boat is heeled over.

None of our sinks have residential type traps or even loops in the drain hose. They just flow straight out.

Yep that's it. Boat should be coming out of the water soon for bottom paint. Will replace the gate valve with a ball valve and check the integrity of the thru hull.
