I need to adjust the tension of the three shouds on each side of my 1984, H31 with a Loos gauge as they are clearly too loose. Hunter Marine technical support recommends to adjust the tension to 20% of wire breaking strength for all six. Does anyone know where to get the breaking strength information? Any one has any other useful comments on this subject? I'll appreciate your comments. Thank you. Ed

Ed: You will need to measure your rigging to determine the sizes. Then you can get an estimate of the breaking strength from the West Marine Catalog. You will need to determine if the rigging is 304 or 316 (different strengths)

Lowers 20%? and 304 vs. 316

I'm a little surprised that they recommend 20% for the lower shrouds. Usually the tension on the lowers is less than the uppers (10-15%). Does anyone else have an opinion on this? also Does anyone know of a way to determine if wire is 304 or 316 stainless steel?? (Short of cutting off a piece and sending it to a metallurgy lab, that is.)

The Loos guage should have the breaking point

in lbs. for all wire sizes on it. Also in the instructions supplied with the gauge. Ray
