we have a 1985 shoal draft, hunter 31. The rudder is about 6 inches deeper than the keel. Is this the wrong rudder for the boat or is the way it was designed?

On my 31 the rudder is about 8" shorter that the shoal keel. What's the lenght of your rudder? My boat is now down at the marina or I would measure the rudder for you. Maybe someone else with a 31 could measure theirs. You could try ordering one online for your boat and get the measurements that way.

We just went through this a couple of weeks ago. I doubt that you rudder is deeper than your keel. The yard may place your vessel on it stands so the cockipit will drain.
This issue has come to light over the past few weeks, but has NEVER been an issue in the past.
If the fact is that your rudder is deeper than the keel, it may be a matter that the previous owner had made some modifications.
