Hello all... I'm away from my boat for a couple of weeks, but last time out I noticed that my mainsheet was getting extremely frayed, and was unraveling at one spot. Anyway, I'd like to replace it as soon as I get back, but I don't know the length or diameter, or even the best type of line to use. I didn't have enough brainpower at the time to remove the sheet and measure the length or bring it with me. Plus, I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to figure out how to weave it through the blocks without threading the new sheet through the blocks as I remove the old one. As far as I can tell, the mainsheet, traveler and block setup is 'original issue' for this '87 H31, and the diameter of the sheet is about 3/8" or maybe 7/16. So if anyone has recent experience replacing your mainsheet, and can supply me with the type and dimensions of the line you used, I could pick it up and have it with me when I get back to the boat. Thanks in advance - Rick

Re: Mainsheet

You should use the smallest diameter line that you can comfortably handle. I would suggest that 3/8 is a good working line. The reason is that the smaller the line size, the less turning friction and therefore the easier to pull. Of course, the strength of the line is a factor, but a good 3/8 line like Sta-Set X is plenty strong enough. Why not just take a photo of the mainsheet before you remove the line?

Thanks...

Thanks a lot for the info. And, YEAH! A photo will increase my odds of getting it right by about a million percent.
